Default 38-55 load for deer?

If any one can help it would be appreciated. First, i have more modern guns with modern calibers and scopes, they work fine. BUT I want to take this beautiful winchester 94 in 38-55 hunting this year for deer, it is a modern made gun, the Crazy Horse edition, I have set it up with Lyman peep sights, and tried the only factory rounds available, a little anemic to say the least. No one seems to make jacted bullets for it, and i would like to use cast bullets in it any way, The problem i am having is that every book i research has different data in it. The more i dig into cast bullet reloading the more I find it is almost an art as a science. Hard and softness of the bullets change the pressures, the sizing size effects acuracy and pressures, and of course powders, primers, etc. And we all know pressueres effect velocity, most of the books seem to grade everything on Lyman #2, but all the bullet makers seem to make thier bullets from harder alloy than that. Well, I have finally broke down and ordered a chronograph so i can see how fast it will be going so i can figure out where it will hit down range, but can some one give me some place to start? As it stands now, I have 245gr bullets 18-20 hardness, i have Relaoder#7 and Win 748 on hand, But i am up to trying almost anything, acuracy is first then velocity, but i still need enough velocity to flatten out the curve a little bit. I would like something that is reasonable to about 200 yds. The best i have gotten so far is 25 gr of reloader #7 to group a solid 3 inches at 100yds with the peep sights but i have no idea what the MV is yet. Sorry for the book, but I would apreciate some guidence, I am new at the cast bullet stuff....thanks, Craig

Default RE: 38-55 load for deer?

The Hornady reloading manul#4 lists for use in the Win 94 220gr flat point #3705 with
IMR 4198 24.6 gr -1450 fps to 26.4 gr 1600 fps
RL-7 29.6 gr " " " 31.9 gr 1700 fps
IMR 3031 29.9 gr " " " 34.7 gr 1700 fps

It never was fast ,It just worked .
Good luck and enjoy the stroll down the SLOW lane . I use a trap door in 50/70 some years for fun.
