Default the .284

Has anyone here shot the .284 winchester round much and what did you think about its performance? Can .284 new brass still be purchased relatively easy? I like the design of this cartridge, even though it is probably on its way outta here, and would like to try this one.

I have shot one. A friend of mine had a Ruger bolt gun it that caliber. It was a good one but never caught on. Many wildcats were spawned on this case and many lightweight custom rifles have been built on it as well. Its performance is equal to the 270 and 280. Close as well to the 7mm-08 and will work through 308 lenght actions. I quess that all the good calibers can't make it. There is just to many that don't vary enough to gain a nich.

Bet it would have been more popular if it had "magnum" in its name somewhere.

I have a 284 in a savage 99D. It preforms a lot like the 270,280 or 30-06. Mine shoots the hornady 139 gr sp the best.It will shoot the 154 gr round nose also but not as good as the 139 gr. I picked up new brass at the local gun show.I paid $32.00 a hundred and that was 3 years ago.I have seen 150 gr winchester factory loads at my local gunshop also.
I like my 284 it gives me enough power and range to hunt most anything in a handy lever action.

It's a short action cartridge that is equal to the 270, 280, or 30-06. The only factory load available is the Winchester 150 gr. Power Point load. It's a shame this caliber didn't catch on. My dad had a Winchester model 100 semi-auto in 284. This was a sweet shooter with his handloads. The problem you will have is finding a rifle chambered in 284. At one time you could get the Winchester model 70, 88, & 100. Browning also chambered their BBR & BLR for 284 for awhile and there are some Micro-Medallions out ther in 284. I don't recall Remington chambering the round in its 700 series but I could be wrong. If you don't reload I would look to the 280 Remington or the 7MM-08 before purchasing a 284. This is because there is only one factory load for the 284. However, it's a great cartridge for a handloader.

Essentially, if you have ever shot a 7X57mm or a .280 Remington, you have shot a .284 Win. The only difference is the shape of the case! Since so many other rounds are based on .284 brass, I suspect it will be around for a long time - particularly in view of the now-legitimate 6.5X.284 cartridge!
