Default 300 ultra mag loading info

I am considering reloading for my 300 ultra mag because there isn't anything available currently. I was wondering what was a good starting point. I am using the rifle for elk. I would like a 200 gr bullet, but I may settle for a 180. I am planning on buying unprimmed remington brass. Any info would help including primers, powder, and projectile used.

thanks

Buy new brass. This is one cartridge, where the brass flows forward alot. I start getting bad accuracy after three times reloading. After that you might have to anneal, neck turn or both.

Federal has brass at DL sports. I was trying to get people to go in with me.

For elk, I would use a 180gr and TSX. Try 88-89gr RL25 behind it with 215M primer. First and last bullet you will have to work up for a 300RUM.

Be warned, COL is critical in a 300RUM and Barnes TSX. You have to play with it from 3.55" to 3.65".

I agree w/ working w/ the TSX bullets. I haven't tired the 200gr. but the 180gr. worked very good for me. After finding the correct COL, I now have a super accurate bullet/rifle combo. Just take your time and don't give up. The reward is far greater.

I'm shooting the 200 grain Accubond out of my 300 Winchester Magnum in large part due to this thread on AR that was started about a year ago.

200 grain Nosler Accubonds in my 300 RUM are very accurate with 2840 fps muzzle velocity measured with my chronograph. I load 77 grains of IMR 4350 with a magnum large rifle primer (Fed 215).

I also get excellent accuracy with Nosler 180 grain Ballistic Tips or Partitions using 80 grains of IMR 4350. I get a 2980 fps muzzle velocity with the Ballistic Tips. Haven't chronographed the partitions but they are probably slightly less than the BTs.

I would go with a 200 gr. well constructed bullet. In the "Accurate 2003 Reloaders Guide" using AA8700 Min: 99.9 grs. Vel: 2866 f/s. Energy: 3647 ft/lb; Max: 111.0 grs. Vel: 3115 f/s Energy: 4308 ft/lb. With a 200 gr. Swift A-Frame. This load will slam an elk pretty good!!

Also check out data from Barnes X, Nosler, and Swift. A Win. Fail Safe, or Trophy Bonded Bear Claw will also do an excellent job.

Good luck.

You might as well be shooting a 300win mag as it will deliver 3000fps with the 180gr ballistic tip.My own 300 ultramags deliver over 3300fps with the 180gr ballistic tip.

Geez, I just use a .308 for elk, I've killed elk out to 300 yards with a 180 grain nosler partition.
I don't know about that 300 ultra mag seems to me just a waste of a money. I think most people that use a gun like that on Elk are just bad shots and need the extra power to make up for a bad shot, the extra power is good for turning a gut shot into a instantly fatal shot. I've seen elk downed with a hind quarter shot with the 300 ultra mag. BUT......... yor're not supposed to shoot them in the butt..

Sorry, but I've got to jump in here! HDW, I carry a 300RUM for elk and I would welcome an opportunity to compete with you. I've shot for the U.S. Navy team and shot against THE best shooters in the world in our other services. Take a ballistics course. My 300 will shoot dang near flat out to 300 yards. That's something a .308 shooter can't say. If a man HAS to shoot 300+ yards, I'd rather him be carrying all the rifle he could comfortably shoot rather than him trying to calculate bullet drop vs energy etc in order to actually bring down his elk. There's too many animals getting wounded because of folks thinking they have plenty of gun. The key to successfully taking ANY animal should be bullet placement and knowing the energy when it gets there. I've seen too many folks shooting elk at 400+ yards with a 30.06 and having to hit the animal multiple times to bring it down. That's NOT good sportsmanship. I think it's super that you got your elk with a .308 at 300 yards but I also think it's a real leap for you to make the statement you did.
