Default This is strange. I am confused. Help

Hey guys I have a question, I have been loading for my 445 supermag Dan wesson and been having a blast pun intended. Well to my problem. I have been making some loads up and went up a grain in powder over the last reload and guess what my velosities went DOWN. Before you ask the weather was warmer by about 15 degrees today over the last ones. So why would my velosities go down? I made up several different loads up and noticed that most of my loads went down with adding more powder. I just don't get it. Please help I am really confused.

Brian

everything was the same as the pervious load except the powder was from .5 gr to 1 gr more dependant on load.

thanks

Sounds like you are not burning all the powder. Try a magnum primer, but start at Min. load, or try a different powder. Good luck.

Handloader I am using Fed 210 so should be no problem there. What I did find out when I looked at my CED millinium chronograph manual was that if the tripod or the skyscreens where not stable and when you shoot the skyscreens move it will effect results and my read lower than expected. So I will load up some more of the same loads and try this again. I will not use the tripod and see what happens. just let the tripod sit on the table.

Brian, you have crossed over the point of diminishing returns with that load! I'd be willing to bet the pressure is still increasing, even though velocities are DROPPING!! I have had this happen when trying for a real HV load in the 7X57mm with 120-grain bullets and WW760 powder! I could actually get higher velocities with the 140-grain bullet and 760 than I could with 120-grain bullets, despite using three or four grains MORE of it with the lighter bullet, and as I increased powder charge weight, I actually LOST velocity, just like you! And my chronograph wasn't moving, either!!

Sounds like eldeg hit it. I can't say I have ever experienced this. But have experienced different velocities on different days due to my chrono. Was it overcast both days? Different times of the day. I got a beta chrony, which isn't top of the line. What is the barrel lenght on that dan wesson?

On my chono, I put some scotch tape over the sensors. I got different velocities with and without but seem to get less eronious readings when I use the scotch tape.

I will only add this: Sometimes humidity while reloading will affect you powder.

BC, My barrel is 8". I am going to try to stabilize my tripod and see if that is the reason. If not then I think you have got the answer about being at max load.

Thanks for all your input.

Oh the weather was in the 50's and sunny most of the days I did load development.

445 Super Mag:

You may be using the wrong primer. Federal 210 primers are for Large Rifles. According to my "Hornady Handbook of Cartridge Reloading Fifth Edition" they call for Federal 155 Large Magnum Pistol Primers for the 445 Super Magnum. Good luck.

Handloader 445 supermag is meant to be loaded by Dan Wesson with fed 210. This is the perferred primer for the 445 supermag.

If you are using rifle primers the hammer may not have enough force to fully ignite the primer, and that could be the cause. Although I agree that it could be that you have passed the point where that particular powder can burn effeciently. I would think that if those primers are igniting properly they would be providing maximum flame to the powder.
