Went to finalize my loads with 180gr barnes Triple X in my 300RUM. I figured I would load up 15, 5 each tad different seating depths, 88gr RL25, 215 Primer. 200 Yards. Wow, what a difference .020" makes. Nice 3250fps velocity to boot. I have found my killin bullet.
The one on the upper left is 3.625" COL, Lower left is 3.600", Right is 3.585". I guess barnes is on my good list. So is RL25. I about quit on both of them
Good shooting. I have shot Barnes in three different rifles. My 6.5X55 shoots them well but then it shoots everythuing well. My 257 Roberts shoots them into about 1 1/2 inch groups where is will group nosler Partitions into less than half inch groups. I had a 22-250 that would not group the X within 4 inches and more like six inches. In an artical By Barnes ballistics people they say that rough bores will have trouble with the X bullet but will shoot better with the Coated version and better yet with the newer tripple shocks. Thats half the fun of shooting but it can get a little frustrating when you get the rare combo that just won't perform. The 257 will get to try the coated version. That 22-250 will go back to Hornady 60 grain sp it loves them at about 3400 fps. I can put any combo in that old Swedish Mauser and it will shoot under one inch everytime. Its a Keeper. It needs a new stock as the old military one is developing a crack just behind the tang. I need to find a good set of sights for it and leave that one unscoped.
The new Tripple Shock X is fenominal in its accuracy and I am sold on it for all of my hunting from coyote to mulies in my 25-06. 3 coyotes with an exit hole about the size of a quarter, 2 medium sized deer broad side with the same hole size with little meat loss and 1 doe shot in the neck, it's head fell completly off.

bigcountry,
Agree with your conclusion.
I ended up about .05 off the lands for best accuracy.
The Triple shocks are a very accurate bullet.
The 168gr 300's are very accurate and also had very good luck with the 25-06 triple shocks in 100gr.
If you try to get to close to the lands with the triple shocks your pressures will increase dramatically. That is what they say and I proved it to myself the hardway. At about .02 pressure really took a jump.
You know what??? After me finding this nice little load, they changed the shape of the ogive and added another ring. Wonder now if they are going to call it quatoshock. I called barnes customer service and compained a bunch. Good news with the new ogive, it gets you closer to the rifling with same COL. He tried to say that velocity will increase but pressure will go down. I don't buy that. I can see pressure reducing so you can add more to the load and that will increase velocity. I have a suspicion that a few people were building up too much pressure.
I don't know if I can buy that or not either. However in a way maybe it can or he just was making his point. My rifles will produce mor fps with Barnes bullets using the same amout of powder. The Barnes bullets because they have no lead have to be longer to get the weight. They then have more bearing surface and this increases the velocity. I can load a 100 grain nosler bullet in my wifes 250-3000 and get about 2800 fps. Leaving the same powder charge I can load the 100 gr. X bullet and the velocity jumps to almost 3100 fps. Maybe My reasoning is off but I feel it has to be the longer bearing surface of the bullet. Anyway when I load the 100 gr. X in the 250, I reduce the powder charge to keep the velocity down to about 2900 fps. It drops deer like a rock even at 2605 fps which is what the Winchester factory 100 grain silver tips clock on my chronograph.
