Default ? on 7mm STW

What grain of bullet is " traditionally" used for elk in the 7mm STW? I know that a 175 gr was legendary in the 7mm Rem Mag. I am looking for a general purpose elk load for out to 350 yards.

A good bullet (Bonded or Nosler Partician) of 160 grain and bigger....I' m a fan of the 175 grain bullet for elk. Try the Swift A-Frame.

Good choices mention my Vapodog. I would give the Barnes 160 X bullet a try. If it shoots good in your rifle then you would never need to look further for a bullet for any Game in the 7MM STW.

I have used 160 & 140-grain Nosler Partitions in my 7mm-STW with great results from both.

Thanks for all the info. I was leaning towards the 160 gr failsafes.

For those of you who use 140 gr bullets what is the performance like on elk? Pass through shots? Also do you double lung shot placement or shoulder? The velocity figures are impressive, I am worried that 140 grains is not enough bullet for a bull elk say at 300-350yards max.

I have taken several elk and moose with the 7mmstw using 140gr partitions.Penetration is good with all but one bullet having exited and that one was a raking shot that travelled through a lot of elk before stopping against the hide at the neck.I have taken elk out to over 300 yards with this combination with no problems.I use lung shots on all game as shoulder shots damage more meat but don' t kill any quicker.

Thanks stubblejumper thats the info I was looking for. I have a long time to work up a load. I will try 140, 160 and 175 and see which is more accurate. NBH.
