Default .300 win mag ???

this morning i purchased a Browning A-bolt SS stalker .300 win mag
new toy

I have a couple of questions?

all load data i can find was done with a 24 inch barrel. the rifle i purchased has a 26 inch barrel

1. how much diference does a 26 verse 24 inch barrel make in fps? drop @ 100 yrds?

I will be using this gun for a wide range of animals (antelope, wolves, whitetail, muleys, caribou, bears, and elk)
so i have chosen 165 gr. nosler partitions as a all around bullet.

2. does anybody have a good load they would like to share with me??

Velocity can vary by 100fps or more from gun to gun even with identical barrel lengths and loads. The only way to know actual velocity is with the use of a chronograph. To determine bullet drop the best way is to actually shoot at the distances that you desire to know the drop at.The charts are only ballpark predictions unless you know the exact actual velocity in your gun and the chart is for the exact bullet that you are using. Not just the same weight but the exact same bullet.

Stubblejumper has nailed the velocity thing.....don' t get overworked about velocity...your .300 mag will provide a plenty.....

Regarding the animals you cite....the 165 grain is a fine choice.....I' d recommend using RL 22 powder

67 grains of IMR 4350
165 grain PSP boattail (Sierra Game King)
CCI Benchrest primers

Not a lot of velocity, in fact slow for a 300 magnum, but this produces 1" - 1 1/2" groups at 100 yards.

Probably cost you in the neighborhood of 35 to 45 fps per inch.
You will not notice the difference at 100 yards.

You won' t notice a difference in drop until 400 yards plus. Then it is only an inch or so.

Try H4831sc and RL22 I have had the best luck with those.
165 Partition is great for deer but I would move up to the 180 or 200 for elk.

You can get appx. 3100 to 3200 with the 180.
3000 with the 200 and 3300+ with the 165' s if you work your loads up to max with one of these two powders.

thanks for all the help everybody

i will have to see what difference the 180 makes vrs the 165 but im alittle scared to hit an antelope with a 180

I also like to hunt with one load only

but on the other hand i do have other rifles i could hunt the smaller game with

the reason for the .300 was/is for elk, moose, and bear

Try the 168 gr. Barnes Triple Shock. They' re about the same price as the Nosler Partition and they penetrate a little better. Also, although Barnes bullets have not been know for their accuracy, it seems the problem has been solved with the Triple Shock. Everyone seems to be getting excellent results with them. In the two cartridges I' ve shot them in (.300 Wby and 7mm Rem mag), they' ve been as accurate as any bullet I' ve used so far.
