I started my son on the reduced loads for practice and gave him full strength for hunting. That was at 7 years old. By 8-years old, the gun fit him perfectly and he never went back. At 9, my Sako 30-06 was his go-to. 
I started at 120 grain bullets with IMR4895. But we only target practiced with that load.
