Default 7MM Rem Mag and 7MM-08

What are your go-to powders? 7MM Rem mag will be a 160 gr load and the 7MM-08 will be 150gr.

Afriend who has both calibers asked me to do some reloading and work up some loads from him and I don't know much about either caliber as far as what powder would be the best.

Thanks,
Mitch

Does the Equate brand from walmart work as good as Johnson and Johnson?

7 RM one of the 4831's, 7/08 one of the 4350's. folks without a chrony swear by re-22 in the RM but if they ever saw the lot to lot variation they would ditch it like I did.

I have found that for me the slow burning powders with a max load and a 154 grain bullet was a shoulder punisher. I can across a good deal on some 4320 and 4895, fps were close and recoil was reduced. Both shot a 11/2 inch group at 200 yards off bags, I use these powders in all my rifles except my 222 rem.
You have to play till you find what you like.

Good Luck, Stan

I dont load for the 7mm-08, but I do load the 7mm Rem Mag in 160 gr noslers. Ive had really good accuracy with IMR4350, and the best accuracy with Retumbo. It is slow as snot for burn rate, and it fills the case up to a light compression load, but Ive shot ragged holes with this powder, and the only thing close has been 4350. H1000 shot horrible.

For many years I have used H870 out of my 7mm mag. I got a real deal on a keg of 870 and my 7mag shoots it very good. I'm getting down to the bottom of the barrel now and was planning on using RL22, (to my knowledge H870 has been discontinued), but after what RR said I'm not so sure. I shoot RL22 out of my 300 win mag with less than an inch groups at 100 yards.
RR is all the RL pwd like that or just the RL22?

Thanks for the replies! They are helpful.

RR, I had worked a load using RL22 for my 3006 that was at max and very accurate. The next jug started splitting cases. I pulled the rest of the loads I had loaded and stopped using it. I still have 3/4 of a pound that I can try in the 7MM, but not at max.

my only experience was with re-22 and a pound of re-25, its all double based powder so it is more tempature sensative than single based powders but I saw MV go from 3340 to 3160 by just changing lot numbers, same charge, same conditions, it was just a slow lot, not a big deal unless your shooting game at long range, which I was.
I had read about the lot inconsistancies, but this time I witnessed it.

H4831 has been my preference for my 7mm Rem Mag.
