Default 300RUM loaded to the lands

Well, I seen what can happen when you load the 300RUM out to the lands. I loaded some200 gr accubonds at 3.80" COL with Re25. I was chronoing at 3300fps which is way to high. With 84gr, accuracy was good with velocity of 3150fps which is cooking for a 200gr bullet. But after that wierd things started happening like my POI was shifting over to the right by 6" at 200 yards and accuracy opened up to 4" at 200 yards. But the wierd thing is I never saw pressure signs at all. Guess I will stick with the freebore at 3.625" COL. Don' t want to blow up my action.

BigCountry, what kind of speeds are you getting with a 180 grain bullet and what type is it ...Partition, BT or a Scirrocco?.

With Retumbo 98gr, and 180 Nosler Partition, I get 3330fps with 2.5" groups last week at 200 yards. I need to play more with the COL.

I have tried and tried and can' t get those Scirroco' s to shoot.

Seems to be the case with a lot of people..getting those Scirrocos to shoot right. I think its the copper jacket that is screwing that bullet...hear better things about Accubonds and Interbonds....especially Accubonds

Well, with my Stoney Point, I measure 3.89" to hit the rifling. So loaded at 3.8" I am pretty far 9/100" . But still must need more freebore.

I' ve not used a Stoney Point tool, so I don' t know just how that measurement is taken. Do you take your OAL measurement to the point of the bullet or the minor diameter?

I' ve had the best results with .30 cal' s. when I have only .005" jump. Smaller calibers like more jump. My .22-250 likes around .020" .

The Sinclair Bullet Comparitor allows accurate measurement to the minor dia. which is the first line of contact with the lands regardless of the bullet shape. I have been wondering if the COL mentioned by people here is the same length that I measure. I' ll look forward to someone' s answer.

Bigcountry:

What I do with my .340 Wby Mag. is set my C.O.L to just fit the magazine, and it works very well for me. I guess you will just have to keep playing with it; like you said.

Westbronco:

The Stony Point comparitor does measure off the ogive.

Good luck.

Oh yea, thats what I and most reloaders do. Loading for the magizines that is, but nothing wrong with trying something new, I always say. I doubt you could ever hit the lands with that Weatherby.

I can reach the rifling with a 250 gr. Barnes XFB, 375 gr. Speer SSpitz-SP, and 375 Swift A-Frame, but I have never loaded any. I think I can reach with 225 gr. Barnes XFB, but I can' t positivly remember; I need to see which lighter bullets will reach. Good luck.
