Default have max loads been reduced?

Yes they have, my best guess is because of liabilities. I've been drug through the coals over stating the velocities which I shoot in my 7mm STW, here is loading data circa 1992 from hodgdon and sierra

now this data from 2 sources plainly states 3300 fps is doable with a 7mm STW and a 160, my personal rifle has a 26" hand lapped button rifled custom barrel with a min spec chamber, so that would easily explain the 40 fps gain which some claim as outrageous.
Hope this clarifies things.

Don't forget they also reduced the max pressure the STW can "handle" about the time the RUM came out...coincidence? Um NO!

I know I certainly don't get the volicity listed for a given published load. They must have forgot to update that info. LOL!

Yes, they have. Especially for the STW. I have the original article in handloader by Layne. He loaded hot. Like 84gr of H1000 with 160 partition.

The claim was, his loads are pushing over 65KPSI.

But H1000 has changed. Look now at the data for h1000. They quote different velocities.

You want to see some reduced loads for the STW. Look at Alliants data. I have complained, first because they only use speer bullets, and second because, they have reduced all the loads by up to 5%. With thier new loads, your lucky to break 3050fps with a 160gr pill.

when I had this rifle built, mark bansner told me that the only limiting factor was case life, if the case could take it, the rifle would be fine. I have went up to 88 gr of H-1000 behind a 140 at 3702 fps, showed no signs unless it was hot out, then I get a slightly heavy bolt lift, so I shoot 86 gr as a max load. (insert disclaimer here) I worked up a load with 95 gr of WC872 behind a 160 accubond which was clocked at 3342 fps average, not a warm weather load by any means, shooting WC872 in hot weather at max pressure is treacherous.

Ridge,For what it's worth.I have been a member here for a pretty good while.I have followed your load data ,applications, results, and much more of your firearms activities. For the nay sayers that question you ,all I have to say is *%$#@^&%$#$ 'em (Well I can't really say what I want to )Maybe if some of them put forth the time, effort ,practice, not to mention the cost related to some if not most of long range rigs.THEN maybe they could hit something other than a school bus at 50 yards. That's I often ask for your opinion on a lot of things.( like a new question in guns under 7mm..............Alton

OH yeah, Almost every max load in the newer manuals are well below what they were in the manuals back when I started reloading about 45 yrs ago. I don't know, maybe they have better measuring equipment now for measuring pressures.

I guess I don't feel so bad for venturing into the unknown and deciding my own maxes!
