As a guideline I really don't have any need for the belted magnum brass but I'm a range scrounge of the worst sort and pick up everything I might be able to use or trade.
So I picked up these belted cases and at a quick glance said "self why would anybody just toss Weatherby brass"having noted those pretty round sholders. I get home and sort the bucket of stuff out and I look at the headstamp ,it says 7mm rem mag not 7mm Weatherby. So I grab my nearest book sure enough the Rem has angles and only Weatherby has radii just as I thought.
I guess my question is in the above case is this like fire forming a standard to an AI where the case head spaces at the neck base or was somebody taking too many chances with the wrong ammo.

If is someone fireforming, that would mean they knew what they were doing, and would have kept the brass if it was any good.
Most likely, is someone who is confused about their gun, like in this thread:
They have about the exact same base on 'em I believe, but the wby brass is longer than the RM by about 1/10". Maybe somebody was trying a shortcut to pricey ammo...hrm.

I'm pretty sure its okay to use Rem Mag brass for a Weatherby...I'm guessing he had enough firings on the cases so down the road they went...

I would think or should I say hope to think that someone grabbed the wrong box off their shelf or off a store shelf...Since it's a 7mm bore I don't think it would be in any danger of coming apart but it a miracle that the case neck didn't split...that seems like it would be alot of stretch..if there was only a few of them then they likely saw the error of their ways and stopped while the gittin' was good..had a friend who did it with 7mm/08's in a .308, couldn't figure out why it wouldn't group worth a darn..amazing
lots of guys form 7 wea. brass from 7 mag, alot of folks don't know the difference, so 1 of 2 things happened, it was a knowledgeable handloader who left worn out brass or someone who didn't know the difference fired 7 Rem Mag ammo in a weatherby chambered rifle.
I once knew a guy who bought a 300 wea. and was trying to sight in with 300 win mag ammo, the neck was almost gone after fireing.
Belted mags headspace off the belt so they'll go off if you get the action fully closed.

Either it was someone who ignorantly ran 7mm Rem Mag in a 7mm Wby Mag chamber, or it's brass from someone who forms 7mm Wby from 7mm Rem Mag cases because they cost less than half as much. These might have been culled for defects or just shot out and probably only valuable as scrap metal. I have a 257 Wby Mag, but all but 20 of my cases have "R-P 7mm Rem Mag" headstamps. They are easily formed by running a new 7mm Rem Mag case through the 257 Wby die with Imperial Sizing Wax. The shoulder comes out only partially formed, and I load them up with a known safe 257 Wby load and shoot them and out pops nicely formed 257 Wby brass, except the necks are 0.05" shorter than Wby spec, which is no big deal.
