big,
lapua scenars are one of the most accurate bullets I've ever messed with, the load I worked up the first season with the 6.5 gibbs proved that to me, I shot a hasty 3 shot group the eve before season with them that measured 1 5/8's" at 502 yards, the first deer I shot with them (the next morning in fact) proved to me that they are not a hunting bullet.
The deer was just under 800 yards quartering away, bullet hit just in front of the ham and angled up through to intersect the offside shoulder, the deer was bedded, she never regained her feet but it was just luck.
The 139 gr scenar impacted the deer at around 2200 fps, due to the large empty cavity in the nose of the bullet and the tiny hollow point, the bullet broke in 2, core and jacket separated and went up through the abdominal and chest cavity, the core raked the lower lobes of the spine above the lungs and bone fragments peppered the lungs, the deer bled to death trying to get up.
thats the first and last deer I'll shoot with the scenars.

RR,

I don't know if you remember that post I made not long ago talking about random bullet performance. I had a couple of Speer SP BT's do the same thing and then I had some perform exactly as they were supposed to.

I think there's some random chance in there.

not with scenars Tom, I was warned about them from several different sources, but they shot so well I hadta find out for myself, I did. at high velocity they just drill through, at med velocity ya never know what they'll do but most accounts say it ain't good.

By reducing the effects of drag (air resistance) high BC's allow bullets to retain more of their velocity over time. That reduces their time of flight over a given distance. Less time for gravity and wind to add drop and drift. When RR says "high BC's outrun velocity, I take that to mean that at long range a high BC bullet will reach the target in less time than a low BC bullet with a higher muzzle velocity. Is that correct?

most of the time, and it'll do it with 30% less drop and drift.

I crunched some numbers in my 7-08
a 120 with a bc of .417 vs a 162 gr with a bc of .625
The 120 is flatter all the way to a 1000 yds and beyond
the 162 catches the 120 in velocity at 700 yds and drifts a lot less but is not near as flat.
I would think its easier to adjust for elevation than it is windage though.

zrex, the 7/08 doesn't have enough case capacity to effectively use the 162 weight class of bullets, try it with a 120 vs 140 BT with a BC of .485, MV 2800 fps.
