anyone reload for 7.62x39? im going to to try some 125 gr sierra sp for close range deer / coyotes. i reload for almost every thing else but nevr 7.62 i dont know what a good powder would be for this. and know about how heavy the crimp needs to be. i dont think it to be a tack driver but want it to be better than store bought ammo any data will help. {my spelling and typing is slow and sucks} thanks
If you are shooting it out of a ak or sks the bore is 311. I put one together on a mauser action that is a 308 bore. You need to watch the brass you use, I think it's remington that takes small rifle primers (I've heard they are going to quit doing that and switch th LR but I've still got some with SR around). Factory rounds with the 311 bullets shoot ok in my gun but accuracy is really lacking, commercial rem and win does just fine. I've use H335 for my powder when reloading 125s.
Bore size of ak's and sks's can very a bit, some have been reported as small as .307 and as large as .313. Might want to slug your bore or just give it a try and see how they shoot.

Which 125gr Sierra? They make one in .308 and one in .311. The .308 Sierra PH will be to hard for the slow velocities of the 7.62x39 unless you are well under 100 yards. I called Sierra a few years ago and asked if the .308 PH would be a good bullet for Deer sized game out of my Ruger Mini-30. I was told No. It was designed for extreme velocities and will just pencil through with very little terminal performance.
I have tried a lot of powders in my 7.62x39. For bullets 125gr and less it's hard to beat 1680, it was designed for the 7.62x39. That said, my rifle prefers H 322 and N-130 as far as accuracy goes. H-4198 is a great choice as well.
