Default 1st time question - .270 win

i am reloading my 1st set of cartridges. resized em, trimed em, measured em, primed em. ok heres the q' s: im using lee equipment, reloader 22, and 130 grain hornady interloc softpoints. i measured w/ the 3.7 dipper, then put it on the scale to verify 54.2 grains. i seated the bullet so that the canule (sp) is at the top of the case. with a caliper it measures shorter than min oal on the load sheet, and the cartridge seems fuller than factory rem cor-lockt (shaking the cartridge). did i seat the bullet too deep or is this just a shorter bullet? or is this just a less dense powder, which would explain why it seem to have more. sorry if this seems elementary. tx

Everything seems ok to me. I looked at my Hornady Reloading Manual, and you are using almost the Min. load so you should be ok. Unless you know what kind of powder is in the Remington factory case, you cannot compare by weight or volume against a unknown powder. You are right about different powders having different densities. Since you seated the bullet to the cannelure you will be ok. Next time seat the bullet to C.O.L. spec. showed by that bullet manufactor. Later on you will want to seat the bullet so it is closer to the lands and groves, but don' t worry about it for this batch. Go out and enjoy your first handloads. Don' t forget to keep records of the information on your new loads. What primer, case, powder charge, velocity, barrel length, C.O.L., type of weather, distance of target, groups, etc. Good luck.

Thanks handloader. one last question, without expensive equipment, how will i know how far out to seat the bullet to meet the lands? i have a NEF single shot, that is a top break

george_s:

Read how to measure bullet seating depth string. Either just above you or below you. Good luck.
