It is 1/2" in diameter(.50 cal?), 1 3/4" long, it is rimmed, there is a center fire primer,and there is NO stamped ID on the bottom.[/align][align=left]I'm trying to add some pictures.[/align]

Looks like a 50/70 Govt. I believe they started using them in 1866 or thereabouts...
The trapdoor Springfields that Custer's troops used at the Little Bighorn were 50/70...Other rifles were chambered in 50/70 also...A friend of mine has a Sharps saddle ring carbine in 50/70..

Just measured one of my .50-70 cartridges and it is 1.75" long. The early .50-70 cartridges used an inside primer. The US military used the Martin inside primer. Other inside primers were the Benet and Morse.
