RE: Loading for a 44 mag RIFLE
Wimp,
Generally speaking DG is correct. However you may need a heavier constructed bullet. Depending on the rifle you are shooting, i.e. barrel length, will determine what kind of speed increase you will see when compared to typical handgun velocities. I shoot a Ruger Super Redhawk 7-1/2" revolver and a Marlin 1894CB with a 24" barrel. I started out shooting a 240gr. XTP over 25gr of H110 at 1500+ fps from the revolver and 1900+ fps from the Marlin. First hand experience, a standard Hornady XTP is not designed for and cannot handle 1900+ fps, at least for close range deer. Until I find a better bullet to load for the rifle I have since reduced my load to get me under 1800 fps, the design criteria according to Hornady. I may end up trying the 265gr. Hornady Interlock bullet they use for the .444. Hornady claims up to 2300 fps for it.
I also shoot another Marlin 1894CB in .45LC. Based on my past experience with the .44 I have chosen to use the 240 XTP MAG used for the .454, its rated to 2000 fps. My current load for the .45LC is the 240 XTP MAG over 26gr of H110.
Hope this helps,
Toby
