Tonite, I finally got around to shooting my Winchester Model 70 Coyote Lite in 270WSM. I have Leupold bases on it, a Leupold VX-III 4.5-14x40 (30mm) with fine crosshairs.
I had 3 different loads of Nosler 130gr BTs loaded up. In 2 shots I had it shooting about 2" high and half inch left. I let the barrel cool good, then shot another shot. Hit righ dead center 1.5" high. I should tell you, I wasn't shooting at 100 yards, I was close to 150 yards because of a water hole in the way of my shooting area.
Heres how it played out:
1st shot of group - 1.5" high, dead on left/right
2nd shot - 4" high, 1" left
3rd shot - 3.75" high, 1" right
Just a guess but close to a 3" group for the first group out of this rifle.
I was shooting from the bed of my pickup, shooting across my backpack, and I was dead steady (This is how I normally print really small groups).
2nd group attempted yielded about a 2" group, nothing consistent, one left, one high, one right.
3rd group end up around 1.75" same story, nothing consistent.
I gave the rifle plenty of time between shots, and between groups. I've never had a factory rifle not shoot any of my loads into a SUB MOA group from the first firing of the rifle. I bought this rifle used, and it only had around 30rds thru the tube according to the previous owner. I gave the barrel a good cleaning when I brought it home, and it had very little fouling.
Anyone have any suggestions or ideas to improve upon this rifle? I only have a box of 130gr BTs for the 270 caliber, and I used 12 of 'em this evening.
When I started to pack up for the nite, I was wondering if I had a bad night of shooting, so I pulled the Savage 243 out from the truck and I shot a 3 shot group I could cover with half a dime at 150 yards. So, it wasn't me. Also while I was letting the rifle cool, I was practice dry firing it, the trigger is around 4.5lbs I'm guessing, so its alot different than shooting all my other rifles that are in the 2.5-3lb range. The trigger is great on the rifle, no creep, just a lil heavier pull. I will be adjusting the trigger as low as it will allow me before my next session with it.
Sorry for all the rambling, this gun just upset me tonite.
Make sure its floated and the stock/action screws are tight. Make sure your mounts and rings are tight. Not really sure what else, I would think that'd be a good shooting rifle...

A golf course is a willful and deliberate misuse of a perfectly good rifle range.
Jeepkid - Just checked that, and its free floated very well, this is probably one of the best fitting rifles I've owned for a factory rifle. The stock/action screws are tight, and I know for a fact the rings/bases are right cuz I lock tited the bases in when I mounted the scope.
Not sure what else to check, as it appears the rifle checks out good. I guess I'll see what the manual says for powder and see if I have any other the other reccomended powders on hand, and mess with primers as well. This thing is as smooth as warm butter, hopefully I'll find something it likes. Maybe if I get a chance to run to town tomorrow I'll grab some different bullets.
Whats everyones pet loads for whitetails with the 270WSM? I really wanted to use the BTs, but now I'll willing to change!
Yeah, I'm not really sure what else to check either, but maybe the crown it messed up...??? Did the previous owner say how it shot?

140 gr Accubonds, 58.5 gr of IMR 4350 3/4" groups at 100 yds out of my ruger and that was before the trigger job and glass bedding. Same load shoots the 140 gr SST to same point of impact same group size.

Just look at the parallels of the Nazi regime and the Obama Administration amazingly similar arent' they.
Previous owner said it shot great. He sold it because he was in a bad car accident, and had to have some vertebrates fused, and he no longer felt comfortable shooting a gun with much recoil.
AccuBonds happen to be one of my favorite bullets, may give them a try.
I would also play around with bullet weight and bullet seating depth. My 270wsm didn't care for the 130gr. bullets and loved the 150gr. bullets. I am currently playing around with the Berger 150gr. VLD bullets. Need to seat them kissing the lands.

What seating depth do the short mags seem to prefer? I have these loads almost touching the lands, they are as long as my mag will allow. I loaded my buddies 270WSM rounds for afew years now, he shoots all 140gr AccuBonds, and he is getting great groups with a standard load, seated to factory OAL.
It really depends on if you have a short or long throat. If you have a long throated chamber then you may want to go with an extended box magazine. I now Berger bullets recommend their bullets touching the lands. Each rifle has a mind in itself on what seating depth and load it likes. You will have to load different seating depth and shoot. If you find out it shoots best touching the lands and will not fit in magazine then you can install extended box magazine. Here is a link for extended box magazines. http://www.wyattsoutdoor.com/mag.html
