Default Brass Size ?

This is in reference to the 45-70.

I shot 20 rounds of leverlution ammo at the range today. I full length sized the hornady brass and found the brass to be 2.039". It was fairly consistent but there was a .002" variance.

The book calls for the brass to max lenth of 2.105 and a trim to length of 2.095. That is a pretty big difference between the actual brass length of 2.039".

Is this brass junk? What can I do with it?

Thanks

Tom

I would trim them all to the same (shortest) length so that when you crimp them after seating the new bullets, the crimp will be uniform. I don't think having them all .050 or so shorter than "trim to" will hurt anything with .45/70 cartridges.... Danger from cartridges of the wrong length comes from ones that are too long. When they get too long, the case mouth can jam up into the leade in the chamber, preventing the case from letting go of the bullet. This can raise pressures too much......

No the brass isn't junk. Being short is no problem with a straight walled case like the 45-70 (or slightly tapered) because the cartridge headspaces on the rim of the case. For this same reason you can shoot 38 spl cases out of a 357, 44 spl out of 44 mag, etc. Just go with the advice in the above post.

I have a bunch of Winchester brass that is approximately 2.098". If I were to mix the brass would I end up with inconsistent grouping?

How big ofa factor is brass size in POI?

Thanks

Tom

Different headstamps can equal different case capasity which can equal different pressures. As a rule of thumb don't mix brass.
