Well, a bigcaribou bull may wegh +-400pounds, only half the weight of a bull elk. In addition, these critters are not nearly as tough and hard to kill as an elk-more like a big mulie. The 165-grain bullet is more than plenty, even from a .30/'06. If you'd feel better, use a premium 165-grainer in your .300 WSM. and it will be more than plenty for ANY caribou or small grizzly who may try to take the caribou away from you!!

I've harvested a lot of caribou, and i agree that they are like a big mulie more than a elk...With a 300WSM, if iused a 165 grain, i'd make it a premium like an NP, or i'd just go with a 180 grain regular bullet.

The advantage of the NP or the 180 will be, if some reason you happen to need more penetration like was already mentioned, you will get it.

The reason for the 300 mag is for a good sized wind bucking bullet so a 180gr accubond is what I would pick. Let see 300lb game high winds yep a 308 180gr accubond looks much better than a 165gr to me.

I've seen the natives kill caribou... They fired into theherd rapid fire with mini 14's- 30 round mags., and a couple of them had30/30's. Thecaribou that couldn't run away were finished off and taken, the rest ran across the tundra and were left....no doubt many were wounded/gut shot, as i could see some of them limping.

After gutting them out, they took an old track machine and drug them to a road near there village, andthey ended upin a pile under a blue tarp. Later, after they all piled into a small pickup and left, i walked there and looked them over. All of them were shot, "all over the place" including the guts... I was discusted with the whole thing!

After 25 years of living around the natives, i was prettysick of there lack of respect for them selves, others, and the animials in their area!! I saw many things over the years that just discusted me!!

I used a recure bow and cedar arrows at 25 yards but there is some mity high winds and a wind bucking bullet for caliber is a smart thing to use. If I where to hunt them with a rifle I take my 270win (140gr AB) and my 358win (225gr pt). I figure if some has a 300wsm and they have a 300-400yards shot they will most likely take it, so I advise a 180gr.
