RE: hot loads for the 45/70
THESE LOADS ARE FOR RUGER NO. 1 OR ACTIONS OF EQUAL OR GREATER STRENGTH!!!
I have never shot 350-grain jacketed bullets in my .45/70. But I have shot the Barnes Original 400-grain semispitzers with 60 grains of RE 7, for a muzzle velocity in my rifle of 2270 FPS. Have also had great results using 60 grains of RE 7 with the Lyman .457122HP with hardened base sections and an inverted gascheck under the bullet. Chrongraph results for 5 rounds: Shot 1: 2361 FPS; Shot 2: 2364 FPS; Shot 3: 2364 FPS; Shot 4: 2364 FPS; Shot 5: 2361 FPS. ALL CHARGES WEIGHED!! This is a 1.2 MOA load that is + 4" @ 100 yards when zeroed dead on @ 200 yards.
IF YOU TRY ANY OF THESE LOADS, I RECOMMEND STARTING AT LEAST 10% BELOW THESE!!
My " regular" hunting load is Elmer Keith' s old formula of a 400-405 grain jacketed bullet with 53 grains of IMR 3031. This load is good for anything except maybe Kodiak bears, Rhinos, Cape Buffalo, or Elephant!!
