Default 44 mag loads

Question about 44 mag loading. I have a 7.5 in. bbl Super Redhawk. Been trying to work up loads but no chronograph. Anyone shoot Mt. Baldy 250 grain Keith style with Unique 10 grains? Loaded a bunch and they shoot really at about 70 yrds offhand but wondering what the velocity is. Good meening I hit a 12 inch stump 6 for 6 at 70 or so yards.. Haven't put them on the bench yet. I have loaded XTP's for a long time and decided to switch to cast I'm trying for 1000 - 1150 fps. Also loaded some Cast Performance 255 grain WFL PB with 10.5 grains of Unique. Not neerly as accuarate. So far haven't found anyone that uses either of these loads. Any help would be appreciated. Also any thoughts on this load for Michigan whitetail.

can't help you bro. i load jacketed bullets in mine. but 10 gr of unique with a 250 gr bullet sounds like you're right on the ragged edge of max load. just sounds a little hot for a lead bullet.

L8KER:

Have you tried H110 or Win 296. Good luck.

I've used H110 alot with my XTP's but not with the cast. Not trying to push these bullets at the velocity I could get from the H 110. I'm sure that 10 grains of Unique is not too hot. Beartooth Bullets list 12 grains of unique with their 250 grain WFN at 1261 fps with a 6 inch Super Blackhawk, so I'm sure I'm over 1000 fps but not sure how much over. I know I don't need any more thatn 1000 fps with a hard cast but just curious if anyone had any experiences with this or a similan load. Thanks

2400 is a superb powder for the 44 Mag. Very versatile.

The only thing wrong with these powders is they aren't versatile. Start loading them down or changing the load and both can get crazy fast. Dangerous pressures can result.

Hodgdon 110 and Win 296 are the same powder, as are H414 and Win 760.

You are not supposed to reduce H110 more than 3% from max load. H110 is a powder that is probably better suited for jacketed as mentioned above.

There are a lot of powders that should work well for you. I have just started loading .44 myself, never used lead bullets. I'd take a look at Blue Dot.

Also look for data with Hodgdon Lil Gun, and 2400 as mentioned above.

I have been looking for something different myself. I have used the H110, I'd like to shoot something a little less harsh for practice and plinking.

Blue Dot should work fine. And it seems like I worked up some pretty good loads with 4227 years ago. H110 is a great powder for the M-1 carbine, which I think is what it was designed for. But that's ALL I would use it for. I watched a new .41 Magnum get trashed by reduced load of H110. First time I ever saw a gun wrecked by REDUCED load.
