Default Favorite .30-30 bullet

I have been loading the hornady 170gr fp in my .30-30. What do others think about this bullet? So far I really like it. though I have not shot a deer with it yet. Any other bullets I should look at?

For deer out to 100 yards we have done well with the 150gr Winchester fnsp bullet. Dirt cheap and accurate enough out of a 30-30. We have not tried the 170gr version of that bullet yet. My son had a one shot flop on his deer this year with that bullet.

I have 2 favorite bullets for 30-30. If I'm loading for my contender,my pick is nosler 125 ballistic tips. In rifles with tubular magizines such as my marlin 336,it's sierra 125 gr hollow point flat nose. Both of these bullets driven fairly warm produces spectacular instant kills that are normally assc. with .270 or .280 hits.

Back 20 years ago when I hunted deer with a Winchester 94 I used 125 grain Hp factory loads from Remington. Never had a deer go anywhere but straight down with that load. All shots were under 100 yards though.

My son's have shot several deer and a moose with Hornady 170gr/32gr Win 748 in Win cases and Fed mag primers. Penetration in the moose almost 3 ft! For more spectacular kills on deer 34.5gr Win 748/150 gr bullet same cases and primers.Somehow I don't see a lighter 125gr bullet getting through a shoulder blade /knuckle on 300 lb plus deer reliably.Only know what's worked for me...............Harold

I've been loading the Win 150 grain soft point for my Marlin. The only deer I've shot with it dropped in it's tracks at 150 yards when hit in the neck. I didn't plan on the neck shot but later found the focus bell on the scope was loose and it caused the sight picture to shiftby about 15 inches, the deer was quartering away and it's head was turned such that it lined up with the vertical crosshair. The bullet hit a few inches below the ears and almost centered. He didn't even kick. That bullet isn't very sporty looking but it shoots well in my gun and I'm confident enough in it to shoot out to close to 200 yards with it and still have enough energy to get the job done. I do wish they would offer the Leverevolution bullets separately for us reloaders, I think that would bea bulletI would like to try out.

I like to use the 150 gr. Barnes X, or 170 gr. Nosler Partition. Good luck.
