I shoot 180gr Federals, out of my 300 Win Mag. I want to start reloading for it. I have read that the 200 gr bullet is the better of the 2 weights. Can you give me some of your thoughts on the subject.
If the .300 mag was needed.......it might as well be noticed that the heavier bullet was in line as well.....
A .30-06 will handle the 150-180 size bullet as well as needed.....the .300 Mag takes over with the 200 grainers!!! It's where the value of the .300 mag falls!!!
I have shot several elk and moose with 180gr bullets and find that they do a great job.I see no need to use a heavier bullet in any .308" caliber.If a heavier bullet is needed I step up to the .338 caliber.
I like Stubblejumper's reasoning on this. I've shot elk with both the 180gr and the 200gr Nosler partition in a .300 Wby Mag. They all died in their tracks.
If you think you need more, step up to a .338 Win Mag or .375 H&H.
For elk sized game and up one needs a bullet with at least .300 Sectional Density (SD) for penetration. Remember though if your bullet does not hold together, all the (SD) in the world won't help. A premimum 200 gr. bullet will work perfect, and hit very hard. Good luck.

personally i like heavy bullets so i say go heavy. but then again its not going to matter all that much. though your quarry might lead you to the answer you need

I like the 180 my self. I never had anything get away.
one shot and it's over.
but big bear I would go with 220 hornady.
180 will blow up to fast in a griz shoulder.
Bullet construction is far more important than bullet weight.A bullet like the 180gr failsafe or barnes x will penetrate more and hold together better than a 200gr or even 220gr bullet of conventional construction.
