i have been reloading for a year now but i cant find what the lowest powder load i can use and still be safe ? i am useing h-110 powder and nosler 240 ggain hollow pt. bullets in a ruger 7 1/2" bbl. if you no the lowest grain i can use please help .
I wouldn't go down below 21gr with H110. Can be dangerous. Even hodgdon will tell you that.
You want a midpower load, HS-6. You want a good plinker, I use 10gr of Unique with 240gr cast. Very nice shooting the unique load.
H110 is not designed to be shot for comfort. Its made for full tilt loads.
My hunting load is 23.5gr of H110 with 240gr xtp. My plinkng load is 8-11gr of Unique with 240gr semiwadcutter lasercast.
But also found a comfortable load with HS-6 of 12-15gr with 240gr XTP. I like HS-6, cause its awesome performance for the 40S&W, 9mm, 45ACP, 357sig,38specialand medium performance for 357mag, and 44mag.
If you want light loads then check out Trail Boss from IMR. It is meant for loading light loads and also can be used to get to the upper medium ranges of velocity.

If you don't have a reloading manualor can't read you should not be reloading.
Amanual will tell you safe loads from minimum to maximum and all recomended powders forany cartridge/bullet comboyou want to load.
This question is like what's the best load for my gun, If I gave youa load that I worked up for mygun, more than likely youwon't have agun and be in the hospital if you fire it in yours
Not all guns are the same, a load that is safe in one might beharmful/deadly in another.
If the newbes would purchase manuals and read them cover to cover instead of asking or looking up loads on the internet, they would understand what and how different thingseffect pressures.

If you are trying to say that a load within (SAAMI)limits and used in
7 1/2 inch barrel wouldn't be safe in 2 inch barrel orvice versa youneed to reread or get a different manualand try to understand it, because chamber pressure is going to be about the same, but velocity and muzzle flash will be very different.
What you are asking is something that only you can figure out for your gun,(NOT ALL GUNS ARE THE SAME EVEN IF THEY ARE THE SAME MAKE AND MODEL)what is safe minimum or maximum load in onemight be hazardous or deadly in another. Example to low pressure could cause the case not expandand seat to chamber wall when fired thus lettingHOT gases back down between case and chamber into your face causing burns to face and eyes.
I do understand OUT SIDE THE BOX AND WORKING LOADS UP OR DOWN (FOR EACH INDIVUAL GUN)and knowinghow to read the signs of to low pressure or going the other way with maximum andreading the signs of to high pressure. (things you should know before you start reloading)
If you read a good manual cover to cover then you would know what
these signs areand you wouldknow how to reload minimum to maximum for your gun.
You didn'task anything about shotshell you asked about reduced load for H 110 and 240 grain hollow pt bullet.
If your manual dosen't list shotshell loads then you need another manual that does because shotshell loads are completly different than bullets, most shotshell loads for hand guns onlyuse mag. primers or very small amount of very fast powders like unique or bullseye. my manual has info, if you would like I could give them to you.
Not trying to start argument or cause aggervation just trying to make point about reloading, a good manual will give youALL the information you need know about reloading, other than maybe which bullet peopleprefer for the game they hunt.

thanks all help is needed . i have a lee and winchester manual . i am looking for a manual that might show lower loads like for police revolvers and target shooting. not for hunting . the loads i use now are fine for hunting i just need to find info to be safe at the lower loads . if i cant get the lower loads i am needing i will start loading 44 spc. and use a different bullet , that will help with what i need. if you no of any manuals that will help please post or let me no . and what would you say is the best over all manuals out there . thanks mark.??????????????????
IMHO I wouldnt try the reduced loads with H110 anyways, that is a high performance powder and is intended for high performance loads. Using a powder like the Trail Boss by IMR that I recomended earlier would be a much better choice. Why might I ask are you insisting on the H110, is it because it is what you have right now? I have shot with the H110 as low as 18 grains with success, but that was in my 1894 Marlin, not in a pistol.
