Best powder for a .308 win. ?

I don't have much money to spend on lots of powders and bullets. So what do you think would be the best to go with. My rifle has a 20" bbl and I would like to get the most vel and accuracy I can. I know every rifle likes different stuff. But, what would you use to start with ?

I have had best luck with Varget or IMR4064. Very versitile and usually produce excellent velocities for 150gr and 165gr bullets.

Reloader 15. It is a lot like Varget, but better in my opinion. I use it from 125 to 175 grain bullets.

varget or reloader 15 are great for the 308 win,on the nosler website it states 48.5 gr (max load)of varget will give u 3001 fps with 150gr bullet.thats prob 24 inch bbl so u should get around 2900fps with your 20 inch bbl.BUT u should check this load over .my mannual states max load for varget 150gr bullet is 47gr......Im sure nosler is right tho they have been in the reloading business for a long time.

Varget and 4064 have performed well for both of my .308s.

I always used the 4895 for my .308. I was shooting 165 Sierra Match BTHP though to. Different purpose than hunting. Might be something better for a different bullet or weight.

good luck

BC is right, Varget and 4064. I have probably loaded 5000 rounds of 308 with 4064.

Made it to the range today with everything I could scrape up. Win. pp, Remington corelokt, Federal power shok. reloads with 748,3031 The conditions were not good, 96,sun in eyes, humid with a strong swirling wind. I shot 3 shot groups with them all. with the rifle zero at 2" high at 100. Nothing did much good about 3" groups untill I tried the cheap federals. I shot about an 1" group at 100. Then started shooting at milk jugs of water at 200,250 and 300 yds. and got lucky, hit them all. I guess that is good enough for a lever gun with a 3x scopeBut, soon as I can I will try some 4064
Anyone know what Federal loads in their power shockammo. bullet, powder ?

I like Winchester 748 ball powder. This fine granulated powder is easy to work with and obtain a more consistant load from case to case. I shoot a Remington model 700 Varmint Special (22" barrel). My favorite load is 49 grains under a Hornady 168 gr. boat-tail hollow point. The charts say I'm getting 2800 fps at the muzzle, although I've never personally clocked them. In the past I was able to obtain a 4" group @ 600 yards.
