Default .308 Win load for my little Rem 600

Getting back into reloading after 20 years. My little ol' Remington 600 with its 18 1/2" barrel is just aching to get back to work. MyDad bought it for me in '66 when I was 15.Yes, it had the safety/trigger recall done to it. I loaded for it in the distant past using 150gr Hornadyson top of43.5gr IMR3031or 165gr Hornady with 46gr.Win748. Heck, with these loads I got MHPP at 400 yards with open sights!

I have a large inventory of 165gr and 180Gr Nosler Partition, but plan on staying with the 165s for the .308. I plan on using the little rifle in brushy and heavily wooded conditions on deer and elk, definately less than 50 yard shots. In my early years I took my fair share of both with this rifle, some close enough that I didn't really need the sights, but I used them out of habit.

Since I see that things have progressed some over the years, what are you guys with short barreled .308s using to get the 165's to thier mark without lighting up the forest with too much muzzle flash.

Any experienced input for short barreled .308s would be greatly appreciated. I'll check back Friday when I get back from a short weekday vacation in Eastern Washington.

Thanks to all, Dave

I have a 600 Remington as well. It liked 4064 right from the start so I never changed. My load with the 165 was 43.0 grains but that was listed as close to Max.

Thanks for the reply. Just happen to have a pound of the stuff on hand. Guess I'll load a few starting about 40gr. and see what happens. I'll use some oldrounds I loaded for it years ago to get the little round holes in the right area, then try the stuff loaded with 4064.

Thanks again. Dave

Wow I've shot the same load except with the 150gr nosler partition for years! In fact thats the best load I've found in that rifl.Mine likes IMR 3031 better than any other powder,so 8lb keg of it last a long time between it and 223,and 22-250.I also use 165gr Hornadys in mine with 42.5grs 3031.
