I have a can of H-4831 and was wondering if it was comparable to IMR-4831???

Yes it's comparable. Not quite as powerful, but more consistent. Load data should not be interchanged.

H-4831 is usually a tad slower burning than IMR-4831, which means you usually reach peak pressure sooner using IMR-4831 (and with less powder than)you will using H-4831.

They are not interchangeable. Always follow safe loading practices; work up slowly, stayingwithin the maximum listed load in the manuals.

By the way, which will be the most consistant for you will vary depending on which powder "your" rifle likes. It alsocan vary fromlot numberto lot number from each powder!

Both are good powders.

H 4831 is slower than IMR 4831. H is closer to R-22 while IMR is closer to R-19. Do not interchange load data. Here are a couple of burn charts to look at.

While it may be possible that some IMR and Hodgdon (and even AA) powders sharing the same numerical name may be the same, it's also known that some of them are not the same and the simplist way to remember this is to never load IMR powder with "H" data.....loading data is free and the internet has it as well.....there's no excuse for not looking up loading data for the powder you are using.

It would be my hope that now that Hodgdon has bought the IMR powder line that they eliminate the duplicate powders as it just makes sense......and so far they haven't.
