Default 7mm-08 or.270

if you have read my other forum "accuracy of semi-auto?," you already know that i am purchasing a new deer gun. the new question is, should i get .270 or a 7mm-08. not that there is probably a big difference, though i already have 2 .270s. how is the performance of each bullet? velocities? grain size? etc...

thanks again,
Chris

Do you want reloading information on each caliber? It is the reloading page. Both kill deer and a deer won't know the difference.

I shoot 130gr sierra gameking with 54gr of IMR4350 out of my 270. Velocity around 2950fps. A guys should be able to get this round up to 3000fps with different powder, but I like this load.

And shoot 48gr of IMR4350 with 140gr gameking out of my 7mm08 velocity around 2750fps. A person can easily get the 08 up to 2900fps with the right powder, but this shoots sub .5moa for me.

I'd go with a 7mm-08. The .284 bullet's success speaks for itself. The 7mm-08 is known widely for its natural accuracy, grain sizes can go up to 175gr (although 162 would be an ideal max), not a real fast shooter, but neither is the 270 and it will git 'er done. Like you said there isn't a huge difference but I would opt for the 7mm-08.

I'd opt for the 7mm-08. Shorter action, more bullet selection, and no loss of energy or velocity. 120 gr nosler bt or sierra spt for 120-160 lb deer out to 250-300 yds. 140 gr partions on bigger deer and maybe elk . Maybe 150-160 for black beer. Hornady and sierra make 100 gr hp for varmints @ about 3100-3200 could be a lot of fun.

I have each in my gun safe and enjoy them both. Since you have 2 .270's already go for the 7-08. You won't be dissapointed and in fact quite impressed. I was when I bought one for my son and now after shooting it a bit am looking at getting one for me also.

LOL For all intents and purposes they are ballistic clones. I have 2 of each...if you already have 2 270's go for the 7-08. 7mm bullet selection is just outstanding though.

I don't know....just feels that my 7-08 has less recoil than my 270's. 130's in the .270's and 140's in the 7-08. And as was said before, better bullet selection for the 7mm. If you already have two .270's, I'd sure try the 7-08. You won't be disappointed, I'm sure.

I have both and in my 7/08 I shoot the 120grhornady sp with varget, and I think it is around 3100fps,don't have my notes handy. It sure does well on deer and the bullets shoot like a match bullet, the HP's shoot the same but haven't tried them on deer.
Since you have the 270 I would go for the 7/08 too.
