Default Starting Out - Which Caliber First?

First, thanks to all of you out there who are so helpful to the folks on this forum. I've read a couple months worth of posts and they've been very insightful.

I'm seriously looking at doing my own loading. I have not started looking at equipment yet, but have started doing my reading. Right now I'm working on Lyman's 47th Reloading Handbook, Noslers Reloading Guide (5th), Spears Reloading Manual (13th), and Hornady's Handbook of Cartridge Reloading (5th). You know, I didn't study this hard in college!

Anyway, I have a 270WSM, and am looking at a 7mm-08 for shorter yardage, or when I just don't feel like shooting the magnum. Which would be better to start with? The WSM ammo is a little pricey and reloading would help that. However, I've seen posts on other forums regarding issues with the WSM chamber size and case expansion problems. Maybe I'm reading too much into those few messages.

Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

If you own the wsm, start loading for that one first. It'll save you megabucks over factory loads. The 7mm-08 is a great caliber, it's only slightly behind the 7mm Magnum ballistically and is quite a pleasure to shoot so you can use it on the longer shots too. Your best bet will be to buy a kit to start with. That will get you what you need to start handloading. After you've been at it a while you find the things to make life easier and produce better accuracy.

If I understand you correctly, you want to know what would be easyer. I would do the 7mm-08 first to &quot;get your feet wet&quot; and the rest will fall into place quickly after a while! The 7mm-08 is a great caliber to start with...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Well, since there's a lot more thoroughly tested data available for the 7m/08, it might be the best for getting your feet wet. But, since the 270WSM is a rimless, beltless case also, it should not present any real strange problems to reload it either. As long as you can get some reliable data for it to start with...

Keep yore powder dry!!

I'd just start reloading the 270 WSM and skip the 7mm-08. I don't see any reason to get the 7mm-08 if you already have the WSM. Buying one for short range work is kind of questionable logic in my opinion, I can assure you that if you shoot a deer 50 yds away with the WSM it'll die just as well as if it were shot with a 7mm-08. If all you want is lower velocity then download the WSM to 7mm-08 levels. Also, take what hear from some of the naysayers about the WSM lineup with a grain of salt. I load for a 300 WSM and it works just like any other bottleneck cartridge, there are no mysterious problems with it that some would have you believe. There are some on these boards who abhor anything new in the world of shooting. If it's not based on a 30-06 case then they preach how it'll be impossible to reload and make up all kinds of fantasy problems with the new round. Heck, there are tons of guys hanging around these boards who'll claim belted magnums aren't suitable for reloading, that you can only get three reloads out of one, they don't headspace properly, they're inaccurate, etc, etc. Guys like me who've been reloading them for 20 years or so just shake our heads and wonder what they're smoking and who they got this crap from.

Personally, I would spend the money for the other rifle on something different like a 22-250, they're always fun to plink with and a day shooting coke bottles at extreme ranges with one will do amazing things for your marksmanship. On the other hand a good .375 H&H should be owned by everyone, and they're a blast to shoot. I wouldn't spend the money on something as close to your present rifle as a 7mm-08. That's a lot like these guys I run into who own a bunch of rifles but they're all in .308, 30-06, 270, 7mm rem mag, 280 etc. Why? What one will do the others will do just as well.
