Default 7mm rem which vv powder for 140&160gr?

I have been working with rl22 andthe 140gr ab, and the rl22 is very temperature sensitive, my loads 66.5 gr room temp from car av speed 3020fps, 20 min-30 min later same load av speed 2850fps. I was expecting a loss but thats to much, so I'm looking for a powder thats less sensitive to temp change and I've heard that Vihtavuori is more consistent, so which one should I get?
Thanks

According to Lapau the N165= H4831 and the new N560 = RL22 burning class. 140's& N160 seems like a fit as well, though may not yield the best results when you work up 160gr's. I haven't used VV powders in my 7 rem mag though b/cof 2lbs cans, price and availability (here). H and IMR powders have worked well for me in the past so I defer to them.

Your RL22 results seem extreme. I use RL22 and haven't noticed that much difference, though I don't chrono every time I shooteither, myPOI remains consistent.

Have you tried bumping the charge up? What about primers?(I use 215M's)

Good luck

I useFed 215, and I just was not expecting that much of a velocity drop from room temp to 30 degrees, Just curious if other powders exibit less change at those temp changes?

Elmer your basis is sound butshould be able to do your testingwithout investing in a 2lbs jug of VV? Maybe the price and availabilty isn't a concernwhere you are at but here min of $80 if you can find any local to begin with and if not mail order brings that price upto over 100 bucks. I have spent $ ondumber things but for basically an experiment (at this point)I'd look at H4831 under the 140gr and compare/contrast the results with a $30 investment instead.

What other powders do you have on hand?
Have you tested any others with the 7mm rem mag?If so what was the results?

Assume you worked up the RL22 load and settled on 66.5gr accordingly. However if that is where you stopped why not work up further in .5's till you see pressure signs or reach 70grs (what most consider max area for this powder and 140gr pills in the 7mm rem mag). 140 @ 3050 out a 7mm rem mag is low, should be able to achieve 31-32k's without to much troubles.

Have not tried other powders yet,but I did not like the fact that there could be such a variance due to temp swings, thats why the questions. I useally work up loads for hunting at 5 to 25 celcius and get the accuracy I want but if I go hunting at -20 looks like there will be a change with this powder, so I would like more temp consistent powder, or at least not that big a swing, (150fps) that would sure cause point of aim at 300yrds to be different maybe not enough to miss but injure a deer possibly.

It's not uncommon to lose 200fps in sub-zero weather. The Hodgon powders seem to be less tempermental in terms of temp.On the other hand hunting in a tropical/African climate raises the preasure and loads need to backed off a couple grains to feed and function properly.Shot a grouse once in -50 C with a 20ga and it sounded like a .22 short and froze in the chamber.Kind of comical.....................Harold
