It is a bunch of bull. I still dip into some cans of IMR-4064, IMR-3031, and IMR-4895 that are AT LEAST 30 years old. My groups are pretty good, and while I've not chrony-ed them, the tight groups would indicate consistent velocities. Having not chrony-ed them I don't know if the velocities are up to par with what the books say they should be, but the dead deer that haven fallen to the handloads apparently viewed the velocities to be sufficient. Kept cool and dry most powders should have remarkable shelf life.
I do not follow the loading industry news closely, so if there are some new powders that degrade in 6 months I haven't heard about it yet.

clyde,
If you get any further info re: this ......... such as the brand and types of ammo this is alleged to be involving... PLEASE notify this forum. This is a serious and inexcusable issue, if it is really taking place.

I seriously doubt any manufacturer would risk the lawsuits that could result from something like that . They would have to state as much on the ammo or everyone would be demanding a refund .If they did state that on the ammo who would buy it .

This appears to be one of the proposals that the anti-gun folks came up with at about the time that these same geniuses (Pat Moynehan, for example) were proposing such nonsensical ideas as putting serial numbers on BULLETS!! Component/ammo manufacturers pointed out that, among other things, to try to produce primers, powder, etc., with such characteristics, in addition to probably being unattainable, would result in a product which was actually very dangerous (unstable!!). Besides, would we want our cops and military folks running around with ammo made last year that might not go bang?? I believe this idea went out along with Bill Clinton and other such ilk!! Hopefully forever!!

Keep yore powder dry!!

I'm still making bullets from a hand-me-down can of IMR4350. The price tag reads $3.25. That must be old.
