How do I calculate my long range bullet drop? I want to get the Leupold BDC target knobs, but my book only goes 500 yards, I'd like to go out to 800 or so.
Thanks

For those who understand, no explanation is needed. For those who do
not understand, no explanation is possible.
A golf course is a willful and deliberate misuse of a perfectly good rifle range.
Anything after 500, beleive me, you just got to find out for yourself. Any little thing will throw off your calculations. I put a little piece of paper in my flip up scopes.
I have used a program called Exbal with some success, since it allows you to enter such things as altitude (big factor out here) and temperature into the calculations. Only other significant issue is that some companies are less honest (or maybe more honest) in their published ballistic coefficients. So, like Big Country said, you almost have to put in your time at the range when shooting beyond 500 yards or so. No short cuts here.

Check out www.biggameinfo.com and look for the ballistics calculator. I haven't checked how accurate the stats are, but it does account for temp and alt. As posted above this is just a guide and must be tested and modified for your gun, load, conditions, etc.
Thanks guys. Thats a pretty cool website okgobbler, thanks. Are the one in the Barnes book usually pretty accurate? I will probably set it up for 140gr Barnes XLC's. I just fugure why not set it up for longer, its the same price either way.
Thanks

when you enter the data into the ballistic program, if all is accurate it will give you a close , (most of the time) idea what your load will do, then you can make a drop chart, then before you order your BDC turrets, you must confirm your drops, but these turrets after 700 yds, begin to lose precision due to varrying current atmospheric conditions. going up in altitude changes the barometric pressure, barometric pressure changes the bullets BC, humidity/temp will change your velocity.
All this doesn't effect much to 700 yds, you can pretty much use simple math, but beyond, if you change alot of things a little, it can end up being enough to miss the proverbial broadside of a barn.

You can use thios online calculator if you know MV, B.C., weight, etc. of the load. Goes out to 1,000 yards. Ought to be far enough! http://www.handloads.com/calc/
