Default My 2nd harvest with a ballistic tip

Well, I got a second buck with my 140 Nosler BT's and I couldnt be more happy because of 2 reasons. #1 even though he wasnt as big as my Minn deer I got to shoot my 1st and 2ndbuck with a rifle in the same year! (Ive taken about 25 bucks with my bow) #2 This scenario was completely different than the other and helped me find out some things. In my last thread all of the naysayers towards ballistic tips said "on close shots they do not perform as well". Well on this deer he came in at 75 yards and was standing still. I shot him just a hair above the shoulder and took out one lung and the front half of the heart. After the shot he stood up on his hind legs like a Bronco then took 3 drunken staggering steps and collapsed. He didnt go 15 feet. One thing I noticed with this one as well as my first was the blood spray back towards me. There was blood 6' from where he was standing back towards my stand! Man I am HAPPY!!!

Congrats on a nice buck. This proves that it is really possible to kill deer without resorting to someones' one dollar bullet withan exotic name.

The first antelope I shot with a Nosler Ballistic Tip (130 gr. .270) did the same thing. After raring up on his hind legs, he fell over backwards and stuck his horns in the prairie.

Congrats on your success..Despite mixed reports on ballistic tips, I've had excellent results with the 140 grain in my .280 and my 7mm 08...I've used it on about 20 head of big game at ranges from point blank to about 400 yards, including pronghorns, whitetails, mulies and 8 adult bull caribou... Most of the bullets exited and all killed quickly...

Thanks everyone for your kind comments. I did forget to post one thing, I forgot to mention how not only a great learning experience this year has been but the self satisfaction I have. As alsagr mentionedI was a person who in the past paid $25-30/box for ammo, but the thought of knowing that I took this animal with something I preparred in myown home has made my harvest mean so much more. I am a bowhunter at heart and never really cared for rifle hunting until I started reloading. This hobby has made gun season so much fun!!!!! And these one shot one kills has made me feel like Im doing something right!
