Default Hornady 50 SPSX

Just picked up a couple boxes of these bullets today. Curious is anyone has used these bullets before, and what they SX means, and how are they different from regular SP's? Gonna load some up and try them on jack rabbits. Will post results

Well, went to the range this evening. Used some IMR 4895 from 24.5 to 26.5 in 1/2 grain incriments at 4 rounds each for a total of 20 rounds. Best group was with the 24.5, came to .456 CTC, should be interesting to see how they will do on jacks, knowing that they are "super explosive."

I handloaded them many years ago for the .222 Remington. The SX bullets were designed to blow at velocities under 3200 fps as I recall. They were like little artillery rounds.

i use them in my .223's too only i use the 55 grainers over 25 grains H4895. they turn a jack bunny inside out quite nicely id say they are more explosive then a V-max if they shoot good for ya then they are way better then a V-max since they are considerably cheaper.

you still shooting that crack barrel new england single shot? .456 CTC is darn good for Im assuming 100 yards from that new england. you will be pleased at how well they splatter a bunny.

I used to use bunches of the SX bullets. As the countryside gets more and more populated I find myself putting them in many of my varmint shells. Inside the box you should find a note saying max velocity is 3600fps. Much over 3600 the bullet could come apart in mid air. I even keep some of my 22-250 loads at or under the max velocity so I can use the SX bullets.

HDW - yup, thats with that little H&R I shot again last night, a 5 shot group. Not as good, but there was another person at the bench also shooting his muzzle loader, and had the bench set different then what I had the other night, so I couldn't use my bi-pod. Still right at an inch though, so I think it should be a keeper. Gonna keep a target with me, and try it when I can set the bench where it needs to be for me.

I thought the tag said 3400, I know they come apart at about 75 yds out of my 26" barreled valmet in 223.

I was told not to push them any faster then 3200 fps, maybe thats for the 55 grainers. but thats why I load the 55 grainers with 25 grains h4895.

I have yet to shoot a living animal with this load yet, but I was at the range the other day, and shot a pop can. The load I have should be going around 2950-3000 with the 24.5 grs of IMR4895. Anywho - I shot the pop can at about 50 yards, and there was a main hole going out the other side, and a smaller hole from the fragmented bullet. Should be interesting to see what they do to a bunny.
