Default Tell me what you think

I've got this friend that has a gun safe full of junk!!!! 90% ofhis guns are his granffathers...1 is a 30-06 that was converted from a military rifle the other is a 222 looks like a savage or a stevens, anyhow it's so old that it has no way to mount a scope on the top of the reciever...It has a old a$$ side mount that will only alow you to mount a low profile scope like a 32mm... These guns DON'T GET CLEANED AT ALL!!!!!!! His saying is they will get cleaned the next time he fires them[:'(]Also the crowns on thes guns look like somebody used them for a walking stick in a dirt road... Well every time we get on the subject of shooting he tells the same story about how he took his pre WWI 30-06 ground hog hunting and vaporised a squirrel at 125 yards and a ground hog at 300 yards...

Anyhow do you think this guy is full of it or am I just jealous of his gun safe full of junk

Well as far as the gun cabinet if it is that dirty and he doesn't do any cleaning or proper storage of his firearms I am sure they all could use some TLC.
As for the 30-06... i have a savage 30-06 and with proper sighting in, good optics, trigger adjusted, good loads to shoot I am sure you could hit a ground hog but at 300yards it would be a good shot for sure.
It also sounds to me that he maybe stretching the truth a bit. Alot of hunters have a hard time hitting a deer at 300 yards with a properly setup gun let along someone who never cleans or shoots a pre WWII gun.

Take him out and have him shoot a ground hog at 300 yards with you there and then you will see for yourself.

We (or at least everyone I know) has had shots that are 2% skill and 98% luck, and some of us even have witnesses to back it up. Mine is a deer at around 80 yards, a smooth bore mossberg shotgun, took out his right eye (1st deer no less) my bothers is a crow sitting on top of a frozen muskrat hut at around 150 yards or so, a short barreled lever 22 shot and the crow didn't seem to move, shot a couple of more and saw where he was hitting, walked downand the crow was headshot and just slumped when he was hit the 1st time. Don't discount dumb a$$ luck cause it happens

I guess that if he's such a jerk, I'd quit running around with him. He's not gonna change from the sound of things. (I hope he's not a relative, 'cause you're stuck with them!!!)

Well we were pretty good friends while we were in the suck together... but since we got out we kinda went our seperate ways but still keep in touch... I just get tired of hearing these unbelievable shooting stories...

It would be different if this guy had decent guns and a reloader and went to the range a couple times a year... But the only range stories he has are at some 50 yard range in york Pa that his dad belongs to that he shoots at once a year...

One man's junk is another man's treasure! To each his own! Different strokes for different folks!

Reminds me of the time when I was working in a gun shop in Las Vegas, New Mexico. An old gentleman of Spanish extraction came in one day with a 30/30 Model 1894 RIFLE (the type with a 26" octagon barrel) to "have it sighted in". The stock looked like it was carved by hand out of a cedar fence post, and perhaps it was! Looking down into the barrel was similar to looking into the entrance to the Carlsbad Caverns. Nothing butblack hole, not a land or groove visible. I asked him when was the last time he'd cleaned it. He told me "it wasgrandpa's rifle. I think he cleaned it a time or two!" The muzzle would admit a .30/30 bullet all the way to the neck of the cartridge case! If you grasped the rifle around the receiver and shook it, the barrel would flap up and down several inches due to loose barrel threads. The thing would have bneendefinitely dangerous to shoot!!

I informed the old guy that the rifle was dangerous! Hethen told me that he'd killed a deer at 700 yards with it the previous deer season!! I said, "if you could hit a deer with it last year at 700 yards, WHY does it need to be sighted in again??

I offered to give him $25.00off the price of a new M94 carbine on trade, but he just wanted his old gun! He bought a box oif .30/30 ammo and left!
