Default C.O.L. ???

Been trying to find a load for 2 of my rifles... Browning A-bolt 300wsm and a Rem 300 Win Mag XCR... Anyhow I've found that both of these guns seem toshoot best with a COL about the same as factory ammo.

Has anybody else experienced this???

Yep, sometimes it works out that way. Especially rifles like mags with little freebore. Someteims loading little deeper will cause runout to be minimized too.

in most of my rifles they seem to like factory length COL's the best too the calibers/rifles are .223/ruger, 22-250/savage, 6mm/remington, 30-30/marlin, 308/remington, and 30-06/Springfield. the only rifle of mine that favors a maximum COL is my 45-70/H&R

Funny I came across this post. I had loaded some 180 gr Sierra Game Kings using my Lyman manual's suggestion of 3.280" for max COL. Just today I was playing with my .30-06 Savage 116. and decided to check the COL for that bullet. Putting a 1/4" dowel down the barrel against the bolt face and marking it, then dropping a bullet into the chamber, placing the dowel back in the barrel to the bullet tip and marking again. I got a measurement of 3.275". So I was shooting this load right up against the rifling. I readjusted my die for a COL of 3.250". Now I'll see if it affects my accuracy this weekend.

bronk, you know there is easier ways. Stoney point being one. Split case method the other.

None of my business, but the flex of the wood alone could make measurements vary up to .05" easy.

Yes, however the C.O.L. that turns out to be best in any particular rifle is a very individual thing. I had a .375 H&H that shot best with bullets seated quite deeply, and a Sharps .32/40 that had to have the bullet practically shoved into the rifling as far as possible to shoot best. You just never know about any gun until you test the various lengths......

Bigcountry, I could see where you might think that the dowel would flex, and it probably would it you applied pressure. But just making contact with the bolt face and the bullet tip would not be sufficient enough to flex the dowel. I also have used my brass cleaning rod to do this but you have to put tape over the end of the rod so the bullet tip doesn't go inside the rod tip slightly. I've also noticed that soft point bullet tips vary by as much as .005".
