I got some of the 135 gr. .270 caliber a couple of years ago. I have been testing bullets in water soaked phone books for over 30 years, and this bullet is the deepest penetrating "hunting" bullet I have ever tested. A 30/06 180 grain Remington Corelokt factory load usually penetrates about 12" in the phone book stack. Nosler Partitions about 16". Barnes X bullets about 18". This bullet exited a 24" stack. Recovered it in the sand behind. The wound channel through the phone books was also only about the size of my little finger. So I have been afraid to try it on game. Looks like it could shoot through two elk.

I don't think they expand enough either. Good luck.

I use wet phone books or news print too test bullet terminal peformance also, ive never tried lost rivers bullets before, from your experience with yours penetrating through 24 inches of wet phone book jeez thats better penetration then I got with a 150 grain fmj bullet from my 308 from 50 yards it only penetrated about 19 to 20 inches in a 2 foot stack.

Are the Lost River bulletsmade from solid copper? To be that much longer than the Noslers I can't see that there would be a lead core.

They are made of a solid copper alloy, and the tip is made of some sort of brass alloy. Unlike the original Barnes X, this bullet does not copper the barrel very much.

that is stictly a match bullet!!!

if you want to take a chance on not finding your game by all means use but if you like to find what you shoot use a hunting bullet.

You have your facts wrong the j36 is a hunting bullet with match type qualitys they will expand plenty. I have some and will try them next year out of a 300 winne on whitetails. If you can wait that long I will give you results. They say they expand 1.5 to 1.75 times their size and retain 80% of their weight.

Did you check how much it expanded roskoe.

A friend of mine ownsa Sako Trig-S in .300 Warbird Lazzeroi. He used 180 gr. Lost River J36 bullets on a oryx hunt; he had to hit the animal three times before it droped. Cavitation was minimal. Good luck.

Bigiron - the one I tested expanded to only about .40 caliber. Also, only the verytip expanded - looked like a little flower on the bullet nose about 1/4" back from where the tip was before expansion. I'm saving these in case I need to make a head shot on an elephant someday

In contrast, my pet .270 Ackley load (130 Swift Scirocco) will expand to about .92" (average) in an elk and still weigh about 115 grains (88%). I'm up to eight consecutive one shot kills. All dropped in thier tracks or were on the ground in under two seconds. When I heard they were changing this bullet design to the Scirocco 2, I bought a lifetime supply of the original ones.
