Default Trimmed some 45-70 brass

Almost 80% of the winchester brass mouths was not square by .01" or more in some cases. No wonder I had runout issues in my 45-70.

Whats the deal these days with brass? So I took a look at Remington brass Once firedthat was originally factory loads, and they are square. This makes me believe even more that reloaders get seconds.

One thing, I bought this attachment from sinclair to put your deburr tool in a drill chuck. Wow, reloaders owe it to themselves to get one. Takes the pain out of deburring. Just be careful and hold the brass tight or you might sling it across the room.

Out of my last batches of 243 and 7mm brass from winchester there have been 2 or 3 cases that aren't even usuable. There were creases in the necks, 1 split neck, and one dented in.

Out of my last 500rds of 243 ammo I bought (after winchester experiences) Remington brass. I had 1 bad case, and I was 5 cases short. So out of 500 6 cases were not usable. I'm not sure if this was Remingtons fault or Midways fault, as I bought it from Midway.

Yep, I was working thru 100 pieces of STW brass last night from winchester. 3 pieces out of 100 had actual split neck/shoulders. One had a dent so bad in the shoulder it wasn't useable either. Good news is all were well below the trim level. Not sure if thats good or bad. All measured between 2.829" to 2.838". Trim length is recommend to be 2.84".

This might be last batch of winchester brass.

ALOT OF THE TROUBLE FROM WIN. IS DUE TO THE LACK OF PERSONEL THEY WENT FROM AROUND 2000 EMPLOYEES TO 200. THEY ARE SHUTTING THE DOORS IN MARCH. UNFORTANTLEY I FOUND THIS OUT RIGHT AFTER I SOLD BOTH OF THE MODEL 70'S I HAD.

Winchester brass and ammo is a completely different company to winchester rifle owned by browning. You talking ammo division?

I have always made it a practice to trim all new cases before loading just to ensure lengths are uniform. This is especially important with pistol cases that are to be crimped.....

Eld, reason I didn't is they were all below "trim to length" specs. Hey, for me to get them all square, I need to go down .02" below recommended trim to length or .03" below max length. See any harm in that? I don't.

All brands of new brass I've bought came with instructions on the pack to trim and size before use, which I do. If you want accurate ammo you should always trim to the same length. If you use a crimp length becomes more important. The most uniform brass I've found comes from Lapau and Norma. With Lapau being the best buy. I've read about the new Nosler brass and it is supposed to be among the best, and so is hornady, but I haven't used them yet.I do know if you cheep out on brass you'll be unhappy.I do also know that Winchester and Remington could do a lot better on quallity control than they do.

Thanks for the post, butI think you missed the point. They are all well below min size anyway and are not square at all. Some by .002" below trim to length

I would trim them until they were square. I'm assuming you are crimping the bullet. They need to be the same length to get a consistent crimp. And the caliber headspaces on the rim, to you could trim them quite a bit without any real issues - although I wouldn't go any further than I had to.
