300 winchester magnum load info

I was wondering if anyone would be willing to share a good load recipe that would be suitable for varmint and deer combined.. I would like to keep it below 150 grains if possible. This is for a ruger M77 mark 2 in the 300 win mag. Thanks in advance.

150 gr Nosler B/T with 73.5 gr of IMR 4350 gets me about 3350-3360 fps
IMR 4831 is also suitable for velocity but not in the gun I reload for.

I donot load for 125 gr bullets but the Nosler book says RL 19 and H4831sc have the best velocity.

125 gr B/T load info

RL19 77.0 gr min 3309fps
81.0 gr max 3500fps

H4831 sc 80gr min 3362fps
84.0 max 3521fps

From what I have read on the 300 WM and my experience, the 300 WM shoots best with max or close to max loads. But all rifles are different so you have to work up to max. I loaded my Ruger with 72 gr of IMR4350 and 180 gr bullets forever but have been experimenting now with IMR4064. Accuracy and velocity are very similar, but recoil with the 4064 is noticably less.

My recomendation is to use 165 Scirocco's, my experence is the 150 grain bullets are eratic in the 300 win mag and the bullet selection becomes limited because you need a tough 150 grain bullet at 300 win mag velocity. You could use Nosler Ballistic Tip's but the 150 grain is not a option, won't stay together.

I agree with Bronko the 150gr bullets seem alitte less accurate unless you play with the powder a bit.

The 180grs fly true and are hard to beat on energy ft lbs.

My pet load is 165gr speer boattail backed with 77.3 grs of h4831. 300win mag Ruger No 1. 26" barrel 3180fps. Match quality in a hunting load.

Mine is a 165 Swift Scirocco with 77.6 grains of RL22. It's 3300 fps. Before you use this though please work up this load safely.

thanks for the tips... I have not had a chance to reload any yet but planning on it soon. What are you guys getting for OAL? I am just curious to see what the differences are between rifles..

I use this same bullet/load, except with 77.3 grains of RL 22. Tough enough for elk. Haven't tried it on deer.

Salty, For your OAL question: Close the bolt on yur Ruger and slip a 1/4" wooden dowel down the barrel until it contacts the bolt face and mark the dowel at the muzzle. Next, open the bolt, drop a bullet that you intend to load into the chamber and hold it there with a pencil or cleaning rod and put the dowel back down the bore until it contacts the tip of the bullet. Mark the dowel again. Measure the distance between your marks and seat you bullets so your OAL is .020" less. If these loaded rounds fit into you magazine (Not too long) you're set. If they are too long, you will have to seat them to fit your rifle's magazine. Or, you can just use the OAL suggested in your reloading manual.
Another method is to run a fired case into your sizing die just enough to size about 1/16" of the neck and start a bullet of choice into it (boattails work much better with this method). Gently slide it into your rifle and close the bolt. Measure and reduce by .020". If you don't have calipers, puta sized caseinto your press, run the ram to the top, screw down your seating die until it contacts the case, back off the bullet seating screw, put in your bullet/case combo and run your seating die down until it contacts the bullet. Lower your ram ant turn the seating screw down another 1/4 to 1/2 turn. Again, if this length fits into your magazine, your good to go. If not, keep seating it deeper until it moves freely in your mag.
