Default Tested the velocity ofthe Barnes and Scirocco

A while back I posted a question about reloading book error for the Barnes bullets and I questiond the Swift data, ta da I tested the loads today and the data is wrong. The Barnes triple shock with 77.5 grains ofRL 22 in my 300 win mag was averaging 3285 with 20 rounds shot. The swift Scirocco with 77.5 grains of RL 22 was averaging 3287 with 20 rounds shot, and they both were very accurate, the Scirocco was a hair better but they both shot under 1/2 inch at 100 yards. This is far better than the 3100 fps with 78grains of RL22the reloading data from Barnes and Swift documented.

No person that understand ballistics would everexpect velocities published in manuals tomatch the velocities in a given rifle. There are simply too many variables in chambers, barrels and components. If you are talking 180gr bullets I would be a little concened about the chamber pressure, especially with the sciroccos.

This is particularly good speed for the caliber and bullet weight. Although some barrels are "faster" than others, I might also question the pressures involved at 3287 fps - particularly with the Scirocco. I have a .300 Win Mag with a Hart barrel, and can't quite make 3200 with the 180 Scirocco and RL 22 without getting pressure signs. I load 77.2 grains. You might deprime the cases you fired and see if the primer pockets are loose.

You might also be blessed with one of those really fast barrels.

Both were 165.

Barnes and Swift have these bullets with 78 grains of RL 22 a little over 3100 fps

That sounds about right for 165gr bullets but since you didn't originally specify the weight we could only make assumptions.

Funny how things add up. Buddy of mine shoots the 165 Scirrocco with 92 gr RL22 in a 300 RUM. Chrono's @3300 and is super accurate. About 15 gr.s more powder and basically the same speed. Seems that bullet does really well at that speed and poorly when pushed faster.

I couldn't get either the 165gr or 180gr sciroccos to shoot well in either of my 300ultramags.However the 180gr tsx averages 5/8" in both rifles and the 168gr tsxjust under 1".
