Howdy all! I have a question here. Can you safely convert and use 270 brass that has been re-sized to 30-06? We have done it and experienced no safety issues. The only thing is that you need to trim the cases, 270 is longer. Let me know what you think. EJ
Lots of us who shoot older rifles do the same thing all the time, it is absolutely safe, IF you know what you are doing. Common conversions similar to this are the 6.5x55 Mauser to the 7.5x54 French, the .284 Winchester to 7.5x55 Swiss, 8x57 to 7.7 ***anese, and the .30/06 to a whole host of cases. Back in the bad old days, there wasn't near as much a varietyof brass as there is today, and many conversions were neccessary to keep the old guns shooting. Thanks to the reform of GCA68 (allowing mail order of ammunition and components) and internet retailers, there is not as much reason to do these conversions today. Most brass is available with a bit of searching. The biggest caveat to any conversion is be SURE you know what cartrigde you are chambering. You could have 10 different cartridges, all with a .30/06 headstamp.
I wouldn't mess with converting the .270 to 30.06 or vice versa. They are so close in dimensions that they could easily be swapped for each other!!! I am sure it would be safe [converting the brass], providing the ammo is in the right gun. I would just spend the money on the right brass headstamped for the cartridge I was shooting.

Well, the story is that I sold my 270 for a 30-06 and have 250 useless 270 brass and I am in dire need of some new 30-06 brass. I am poor and us poor folk must be creative when taking up these hobbies! EJ
Usually one finds people going the other way,but i wouldn,t do it unless it was really hard to get 06 brass.Yes it can be done but why? There so much cheap 06 brass around that its really not necessary to do that. Its up to you though. vangunsmith

I think if you have already done it, and had no problems, that it is strange that you'd ask after proving it is OK to do so!
After all, the .270 is just a .30/'06 case necked down to hold .277" bullets......

The only problem would come if someone looked at the headstamp, thought the rounds were .270's, and tried to shoot them in a .270 (they probably wouldn't chamber, but you never know!!)
