Default Did I sin doing this

We recently had a thread about enjoying a cold beer(who abstains). Today I was stuck at the Atlanta airport returning from a trip to over-see the repair set-up on a couple of our generator bearings for our over-haul we are trying to finish up.
From my reading of the bible it is my opinion that drinking a beer is only a sin if you either do so to the point of getting drunk or you feel it is wrong.
As I was walking around the airport killing a little time after my flight had been delayed(4 times total) I walked past a bar and grill. I noticed there was a soldier at the bar. I sat down on the stool next to him and asked him where he was flying into and heading out to.
He said he was flying in from Mosul(bad spelling I know) and that he had been in Iraq for the past 7 months, and he was headed home for 15 days leave in Ohio before going back.
He was drinking a Bud-Lite and he told me how great it tasted. I asked him if he had trouble finding a cold beer in Iraq, he said they had "near-beer" but that was it.
The lady waiting the bar waited for him to take his time finishing his beer and asked him if "He would like a second beer".
The soldier had an "Air-Borne" ranger uniform on.
To make a long story a little shorter..... I bought that man 2 more Bud-Lites and was proud to do it.
For those who think buying our soldiers a cold beer is a sin because it contains alcohol<sp>
I am not so sure I agree.
The soldier left in a non-drunk state and met his plane on time.

Did I sin even with the best intents in my heart?

Thanks
Mr-Pirk

IMO he deserved to have someone buy him two beers. I think you did a stand up thing, I'm sure he appreciated the kind gesture. I don't think drinking is a sin, maybe someone else will see it different.

I don't believe you sinned either. I have the same convictions as you .
1. moderation
2. If it's not done in faith leave it alone.

3. One more as an example in the Old Testamennt. ...Times when you are fasting or such leave alone.
4. If it offends my brother, leave it alone. Romans 14
My biggest one is # 4. I fish with a serious Nazerine. although I heard his pastor agree with you and I he still insist that it's wrong. Even though he knows my heart and my life style all my good would go away if he seen me drinking on a cold frosty. Then there are my students who approach me in the stores. Kids have a lot of faith in their teachers. I do care what they think about me. However; if on my wedding anniversity if my wife decides to buy a bottle of champagne or wine,, yes I will have a glass. I can really take it or leave it. I'm high enough on life and content with my Lord.
Chuck

PS The bottom line is this..not me or any other can tell you if you did right or wrong. You have to go with the leading of the Lord. If you think you blew it...ask for forgiveness , if not... than happy are ye.

mr-pirk, I don't think so! I quit drinking 28yrs ago, but sometimes I take medication
for a cold that has alcohol in it. My doctors tell me to have a small glass of Wine
with every meal to control my colestirol. I have hardening of the Arteries. They
don't produce the good colestirol to keep them soft.
Theres a chemical in the skin of the grape that controls this. I have never done it yet.
I pray about it alot!

Mr. Rebel,

I recall what you said on the other post about alcohol. You diffently had convictions against alcohol. I hope I have not persuaded you otherwise. This is the Romans 14 situation here and I truly don;t want anyone to stumble. I believe you should stick whole heartedly with your convictions.
Possibly a drink could be enough to cause you to back slide. MANY can not handle it. For me TV causes me to backslide. I can not sit there and watch the leud and lascivious advertizements with out them effecting my values. I sincerely believe there is alot of power in the words that we hear and say. That is why I believe we have to be careful with everything we listen to. TV, music, and negative talk. One way to really mess up your day as a Christian is to start the morning with negative talk or gossip. As Romans 14 says brother. If I have in any way been a stumbling block to you let me know and I will NEVER taste wine again. You are more important to me than a glass of wine.
Sincerely,
Chuck

PS They sell the wine ingredient that you need in capsule form at any health food store.

I don't believe you have sinned either Mr. Pirk. I commend you for taking the time to sit and talk with someone who is defending our country. My hat's off to every man and woman in the military who is putting their life on the line, and I thank you for your gesture of appreciation you've shown to that soldier.

You clearly stated that you did not lead this soldier into a drunken state, and this is what is condemned in the bible. Being intoxicated can very easily lead one into all types of sin because it impairs our sense of good judgement.

A very important point was brought up too. As a Christian, we are not to allow our individual freedom to become a stumbling block to someone else. For when we do so, we are not acting in love. If a Christian comes from a background of bondage to alcohol, we need to be sure our personal freedom doesn't cause that brother or sister to stumble for whom Christ died. Because alcohol was such a destructive influence in that person's life, for that person, any amount of alcohol is sin. And as a Christian, we are to consider that brother or sister in higher esteem then ourselves. As was said in an earlier post:

Quote:

Chuck, you mentioned a good point about TV. I'm in agreement with you on that subject. Though we have a TV in our house, we rarely watch it. Most of what's on there just has no redeeming value, IMO. And what many consider entertainment, cost Christ His life. If I'm not careful, I can easily find myself being entertained by what Jesus died for. I do watch the news and I enjoy programs that are educational and informative in nature. We will on occasion watch a family-oriented movie on DVD or VHS. And when the season comes, I watch some football. But that's about it.
