Having done a quick scan of several info sources on the customs of "washing feet" (but by no means an exhaustive study), I see that the custom in all the references that I saw, the washing of the feet was done upon the entering of the dwelling. The refreshing and cleansing having been accomplished, wasn't normally repeated unless the house was left and re-entered.
The washing of hands was done before the meal as fingers were used to eat from a common vessel, and then wer washed again after the meal to remove the food particals from the hands.
We find the woman washing Jesus feet after a meal, but only because the master of the house has failed to wash his feet upon entry, for which he was rebuked and the woman praised.
I am not looking for the obvious sanitary reasons for the common practice, but the spiritual applications that will futher our walk with God in our day and time.
