Imo, a joke that relies on celebrating the supression of free speech through violence and intimidation is just not funny. Frankly, I'd say it's disgusting. How many american's have suffered and died to preserve our 1st ammendment rights? To portray a soldier in such a manner is an insult to the american people and particularly the american military. Now of course I'd agree that the professor in the joke was spewing nonsense as would the majority of americans, but free speech means nothing if people are only free to express the majority opinion.
Of course it's a joke, but because it's a joke doesn't make it any less inappropriate, nor does it render it immune from criticism. Comedians play that card all the time, thinking they can say whatever they want and then hiding behind the "it's just a joke" routine when they're criticized for it. Well that dog just don't hunt. Look, if you want to pass along jokes that make light of supressing a fundamental right through violence and intimidation and mocks the sacrifice of our military, I'll defend you're right to do so. But it's my right to criticize it and tell you it's in poor taste and insulting to soldiers--portraying them as jack booted thugs trampling the constitution. If you think you can post this kind of crap and think nobody can rightly ciriticize it then it's YOU who needs to "get over yourself".
O.k. so let me ask you guys a question. Seeing you're happy the marine violated the professors right to freedom of speech are there any other constitutional rights you think it's o.k. to crap on or is it just freedom of speech?
Isn't it interesting that according to the joke, the marine was violating the right that his fellow marines were out fighting to protect.
Naw, your scholary bias is what's interesting. The professor simpy asked God to knock him down and Marine being the loyal and faithful servant he is, did the Honorable thing and performed the service.

O.K. you didn't answer the first question at all and this is just a transparent and cutsie attempt to avoid the second. Well I think its a serious matter any time an american citizens constitutional rights are violated and I'm always willing to defend them. I won't compromise those principles just because I don't like the person whose rights have been violated. I won't turn a blind eye and I can't even imagine applauding such a blatant act of violence and intimidation the goal being specifically to supress a constitutional right.
If we don't all stand together to defend all the rights of all the people all the time, slowly but surely all the rights of all the people will fade away one little piece at a time.
