Default Anger is Murder on Your Soul

I listened to a sermon about this yesterday and it was simply outstanding. It was about Matthew 5:21-26 (see below) and took this passage to the next level.

Murder

21"You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder,[a] and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' 22But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother[b]will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca,[c]' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell. 23"Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.
25"Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still with him on the way, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 26I tell you the truth, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.[d]

I think the point is not that we shouldn't get angry about anything--there are reasons that are justifiable. The point is to resolve the things you are angry about as quickly as you can, at least to the best of your abilities.

Like the parable of the talents--the master forgave the one servant of a huge debt, until he found out that he would not forgive his fellow servant of a small debt; or the parable of the prodigal son where the father forgave the son when he repented and came back. We are told that if you say you love God but hate your brother, you are a liar, because you can't hate one you have seen and be able to love one you have not seen. (I John 4:20)

God is the perfect and righteous judge--we can't compare our emotions to His. We have to forgive, in order to be forgiven.

"In your anger do not sin": Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,
