Rev 6:12 And I beheld as he opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood.
Two historical events like none before or since took place within 25 years of each other. Any biblical connections??
Non 1st, 1755-The earthquake of Lisbon. Extended over 4,000,000 square miles!! This huge quake covered most of Europe, Africa, and America. The whole of Africa was said to been effected by this monster quake. A great part of Algeirs, Fez, Mequinez, Morocco, Tangier, Tetuan, and the Island of Mederia was destroyed. From the south of Africia northward to Norway and Sweden. Germany, Holland, France, Great Britain, Ireland all suffered ruin from this earthquake. In Lisbon alone, a city of 150,000, 90,000 died that single day.
No-one wept, as it was beyond tears. People ran delirious, without destination, screaming, the end of the world is come. The encyclopedia Americana says the It reached into Greenland. It happened on a holy day and churches and synogoges were packed with followers as the templed fell and buried them alive. It was reported to have sounded as a great expolsion underground, followed by a great shock that threw down the greater part of the city. In a span of 6 minuted, 60,000 people died. The earth was said to open in several different places, swallowing up the inhabitants and then closing over them. Islands sunk into the sea and disapeared never to be seen again. Mountians were said to split and devide, spewing smoke and fire into the air. Cities began to burn and fires raged for days.
Was this great disaster just a chance happening?
The second great mystery took place May 19, 1780 in North America when life began as just another normal day. The inhabitants went to work, to their fields, shops, ect. only to have the light of day rapidly turn to darkness. Cows came lowing to the barns, chickens went to roost. Night birds began to forage. Frogs and crickets began to sing and the noon day became as black as midnight. Lamps were burning bright at noon time. This certainly wasn't an eclipse as it lasted for the remainder of the day.
A similar event took place Oct. 19, 1762 at Detroit, and covered most of the day. It was dark at daybreak and this continued until 9 o clock whe it cleared a little, and for about 15 minutes the sun was seen. It appeared as red as blood and about 3 times as large as normal. The air was at all times a dingy yellowish color. At 1:30 it became so dark that that lamps and candles were needed to do domestic duties. At 3 pm the darkness became even more intense. At 3:30 a rain begin to fall, being mixed with black particles that appeared as sulfur, both in smell and quality. A perer placed in the rain turned black, but when placed neat the fire, it turned a yellow color abd fizzled as wet powder burning.
This mixture floated on the river as a black froth whis resembled the lather of soap but was more greasy and the color of ink. At 7 pm the air became more clear.
These thing are common knowledge, and have been every since they first happened. Do any of yor see a possible prophetic conection?

No, earthquakes and dust storms are common natural phenomena and have no relgious significance. Earthquakes occur when the build up of force along a fault line exceeds to strength of the forces holding the rocks together and a fracture occurs. Fault line stresses are always increaseing because of the constant movement of the tectonic plates on the surface of the Earth and at some point the stress becomes great enought to fracture rock and an earthquake takes place. Dust storms are a combination of natural, or more recently man-made, climatic, geological and meteorlogical factors that result in a large amount of particulate matter rising into and accumulating in the lower atmosphere. When I was in Baghdad I experienced numerous dust storms that caused darkness and an inability to see the Sun for days at a time.
You know Snooky, I don't think either of those events you described in your original post are the events mentioned in the book of Revealation. However, I do believe when the events described in the book of Reveation actually take place, it will make those two historic events look like a day in the park. To those who don't know Him on a personal level, perhaps you should think about it in that light.

Lemaitre, Many times throughout the word of God, God has used the natural elements to accomplish His purposes. The Word gives examples of rain, wind thunder and lightning, hail and even the position of the sun in the sky, to show His glory. Since He created all of them, I guess it's okay for Him to use them as He sees fit.
Blessings to all.....Pastorjim

The ancient Greeks used to believe that lightening bolts were hurled by Zeus and that earthquakes were caused by Posiedon shaking the Earth. They resorted to these supernatural explanations of natural phenomena because they could think of no other reasons for these events. However, since the time of Benjamin Franklin we have known that lightening is caused by a build-up of an electric charge imbalance between the clouds and the ground that eventually results in the electrical discharge we call lightening.
More recently we have discovered that nearly all earthquakes are caused when there is a fracture of rock relieving the stress that builds up between the tectonic plates that make up the surface of the Earth. We now know these plates are all in motion in relation to each other and if their edges become locked together stress will build up until an earthquake relieves it. The movement of the tectonic plates is caused by currents in the underlying mantle. These phenomena can all be explained by strictly naturalistic means and there is no evidence whatsoever that supernatural forces are involved.
As a Deist, I do not believe that Nature's God intervenes in the Creation to cause natural phenomena and show his glory. I do believe that we come to understand why storms and earthquakes occur when and where they do by studying Nature and applying human reason to what we observe.
I'm not debating any of the scientific facts you stated. You are absolutely correct in your statements regarding the tectonic plates and etc. What I'm saying is that there is a creator of all those things and sometimes He uses them to intervene in the affairs of men to accomplish His purpose. Where we differ is the idea that there are many gods. There is but one God, who is in all, through all, and above all. The bible declares that creation itself testifies of His power, greatness, and existance. To think there are many gods actually puts those who believe this in the same class with the ancient Greeks, who had a god for every occasion. Paul spoke to the Athenians and said; "I see that you have many gods, even a statue to the unknown god." I know that many people don't like it when you quote the bible but I believe it to be the Living Word of God. It is the measuring line by which everything is judged. To those who don't think it is what it says it is, there is little hope for them. I know you have heard John 3:16 before, but have you read the verses after it? They really tell the whole story. This is the Word of God; 16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,[f] that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.
Read carefully the 17th and 18th verses. They tell what God's purpose was and also the consequences for not believing what He did and not believing on the One He sent. What a mighty God we serve! But only One, The One and only!
May God bless you in your search for Him.....Pastorjim

Deism is not a polytheistic religion like the one the ancient Greeks and Romans believed in. Deists believe in the one "Nature's God" as mentioned in the Declaration of Independence, which was largely authored by a Deist; Thomas Jefferson. We believe that this entity set in motion the forces that led to the creation of the Universe but does not play an active and ongoing role in the creation. Deists do not believe in a personal God, the divinity of Jesus Christ or that sacred texts of any religion, be it the Bible or the Quran, are divinely inspired. We have no churches, no clergy and no scriptures. Deists believe truth is discerned by observing Nature and applying autonomous human reasoning.
Deism arose in the 18th century in Europe as a result of the Enlightenment and the Age of Reason. It was also widespread among the leaders of the American Revolution including Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, James Madison, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Paine. It is therefore natural that there is no mention of God in the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, rather than invoking the Christian God or the God of the Bible, only makes reference to "Nature and Nature's God" and the "Creator" which were phrases that in the 18th century were only used by Deists.
Deism did suffer a setback with the Christian revivals of the 19th and 20th centuries but it has not ceased to exist. It is true that if you polled Americans on their religious affiliation, very few would say they are Deists, and in fact most Americans have probably never heard the word. Nevertheless, if you probed a little deeper you find there are many Americans who believe in a supreme being who was involved in the creation of the Universe but do not go to church, do not read the Bible, do not pray, do not acknowledge a personal god and do not believe natural phenomena are the results of supernatural forces. So while they may not use the term Deist to describe themselves, many Americans hold religious views that are more consistent with Deism than with any other religion.
Who is a bigger fool.. One who says there is no God....or one who says there is a God, but lives his life like there was no God?
Right on Dabow! The fool sayeth in his heart, there is no God. So is the scripture saying that one believeth with the heart unto salvation? And what is professed with his mouth, but fails to produce the desired fruit, is less than an honest profession of faith?
They honor with their mouth, but their heart is far from me.
