This alignment of the Earth, Sun and Galactic center is a prediction of the Mayan calander made about a thousand years ago and is correct. This was truly an astounding feat of positional astronomy on the part of the Mayans. They had a calander that was far more accurate than anything that existed in Europe at that time and rivals those of modern times. The Mayans also located the position in the sky of the center of the Milky Way galaxy 800 years ago, a feat that was not duplicated by western astronomers until the 20'th century when modern astronomical instruments and techniques became highly devoloped at such places as Harvard University. How the Mayans accomplished these astronomical achievements remains mostly a mystery. When the Spanish conquered Mexico and Central America in the 1500s they made a major effort to stamp out all vestiges of what they considered pagan learning and made Christianity the only acceptable religion and much knowledge about astronomy, where the Mayans were more advanced than Christian Europe at the time, was lost.

The astronomical knowledge and capabilities of the Mayans gives the Mayans credibility and is probably one reason why this 12/21/12 date is getting so much attention. However there is no reason to believe that it will be any different than any other day. Due to the precession of the axis of the Earth's orbit this allignment takes place once every 21,000 years and will have no particular impact on the Earth. In fact, if we had not been told about it I am sure we would not even notice it since the center of the Milky Way can not be seen in light of visible wavelength from the Earth due to intervening clouds of dust.

Lemailtre,
My question is... why does a large majority of unbelievers pay attention to an ancient calandar but not the Word of God..which prophesied the same things except a date.?

What's supposed to be the significance of 12/21/12? Just another day on the calender to me.

It's all over the news Chad..They have over 30 diferent sources that say that the world will end on that date...I don't even have a TV..but I hear about it everywhere I go..so I did some investigation..It was interesting to me that the Bible speaks of the same thing { But list no date} and no one seems to care that much..but when the warnings came from an ancient calandar that was put together around 3100 BC. then folks are getting stirred up..at least in my neck of the woods.

Weird. I watch Fox some, but that's about it. Haven't seen or heard anything more about it.

The Bible, to me, is clear. Nobody knows, not even the angels, just God. Even the apostles were expecting Christ to return in their lifetime. People have been attempting to predict the end of time pretty much since the beginning. Nostradamus, Mayans, different "religious" groups, cults, etc. etc. etc. So far they have all been 100% wrong. If I were a gambler, I'd put my money on them not breaking their streak.

I started hearing about this date more than a year or two ago on Jack Van Impe's show. He wasn't saying that that's the actual day since no one knows the day or the hour, but just that it was a day to watch. Since Jesus stated that even He didn't know when it was, it should be obvious that we don't know either. It could be today, it could be many years from now, but there are "clues" that God has given us that it is getting close and it's interesting to think that that day may be significant in some way. We may not even be here then. . . .

As I mentioned above the Mayan calendar was extremely accurate. From 700 BC, when they adopted a solar calender to 46 BC the Romans used a calender with one year equal to 365 days. However, as best as modern astronomers can determine a year is actually 365.24218967 days so by 46 BC the Roman calender was way out of sync with the seasons and Ceaser decreed a new calender that had a leap year every 4'th year bringing the length of a year by the Julian calender to 356.25 days. However, while an improvement, the Julian calender still resulted in an error of one day every 128 years. By the 16'th century it was off by 8 days and the Catholic Church under Pope Gregory XIII , needing a precise date for the celebration of Easter, created a new calender that essentially removed 3 leap days every 400 years resulting in a calender with one year equal to 365.2425 days. This would mean it would take 3300 years before it was off by a day. At first only a few Catholic countries in Europe adopted it but by the 18'th century, in Protestant countries, by sticking with the Julian calender they were out of sync with the seasons by an intolerable 11 days and the reluctantly adopted the Gregorian calender which we still use today.

The Mayan calender was extremely complicated and was based on a system of cycles of years. The Mayan calender produced a derived length for one year of 365.242036 days, slightly better than the Gregorian calender. The precision of their calender and skill in astronomical observations allowed them to predict the Earth-Sun-Galactic Center alignment on the Winter Solstice in 2012 a thousand years ago. This no doubt enhances the credibility of the Mayans in the eyes of many people who make the mistake of thinking that just because they could predict when a particular astronomical event will occur, they could also predict what if any implications this would have for the Earth. This date just represents the end of a long cycle in the Mayan system and I do not believe the Mayans actually ever said precisely what would happen. You can rest assured though that it will be just like any other day since the relative positions of the Earth, Sun and Galactic Center will not affect the Earth in any way.

Another reason that this date gets more attention than the predictions of some Christians is because it gives an actual date. A prediction with an exact date of when something is going to take place is always much more compelling than some vague prediction that something will happen at some unknown time in the future.
