I have no idea what you are referring to? A particular passage, traditional belief, or???

I believe what passage he is referring to is Matthew 2:1 "Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem"
The word wise coming from the greek word magos which is a term used to denote a follower of Zoroaster or what they associated Zoroaster with, which was mainly the ability to read the stars and manipulate the fate the stars foretold. Therefore they could be referred to as astrologers.
As to how many were present at the birth of Jesus, probably 0.
Matthew 2:11 "And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. "
They came into the house and they saw a young child. Not in to a stable seeing a babe.
Matthew 2:16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men.
If Jesus was just a babe there would be no need to kill children 2 yrs old. So they could have appeared up to 2 yrs after His birth.
Tradition has it that they came on Epiphany, January 6th, 12 days after the Nativity. Of course noone really knows the real day. If you don't know when something happened, you pick a day and celebrate on that day.
We know that sheep were there, and shepherds too, of course

This is what leads to the tradition of 12 days of Christmas...
And, it only makes sense that shepherds would be there, they're always the first to know when a new Lamb is born!

tradition ??? what if tradition is wrong?
I'm sure some if not all of you have watched on TV the story of the birth of Jesus ,which unfortunately is were most people are learning about his birth ,if you ever read in the bible how it really happened then ya have to ask how did TV get it so wrong!
it was not the Magi that came that night, it was shepherds and there was no star that guide them ,the sign for them was that they would find him lying in a manger
No one really can be certain about when they arrived. As was said, Herod seems to have thought that killing all the males under two would have been sufficient to eliminate Jesus.
It's not inconceivable that they stayed for a decent length of time after the birth. We just don't know.

I think you may be looking too closely to see the whole picture, here. So what if a lot of people get the Nativity Story from TV. At least they're getting the story at all. The fact is that there really isn't an accurate chronological account of the Nativity Story for us to use, so there would naturally need to be some embellishment to an entertaining retelling of said story (maybe entertaining isn't the right word, but you get my point). The Nativity Story is an excellent opportunity to introduce people to Christ.
And I've never personally seen any recounting of this story that didn't include the angels' announcement to the shepherds, & their subsequent visit.
I guess my point is that if most versions of this story get all the main points in there, then we can't really complain too much, can we?
