My 9 year year old daughter had her friend over the other night. Shelby is the 7 year old daughter of the pastor to a church I attend sometimes. He and I are friends. Anyway, mine starts to put on a HP movie and Shelby says she's not allowed to watch those.
Why is there still a fear to Harry Potter?
I read these books years ago when the hoopla started, and I've read them all, watched all the movies, re-read the Deathly Hallows and my daughter is 9 and she's just finishing Order of the Phoneix.
How about a broader topic? Just how involved should a Christian person become into fiction? Can one person draw the line for everyone? Is it a personal decision?
I reccond folks who choose not to watch him do so because of the element of sorcery..
You've not read the books then? Its much, much more than that and the core of WHO Harry Potter is? Its nothing to do with witches and wizards, its actually about being a decent human being.

Also..I commend Shelby for standing up for her families convictions..
I do too

Harry Potter would not be played in my home as well.
Why ? do you allow ANY fiction? Do you think kids shouldn't dream of science fiction and fantasy etc?

Stealth, It's not really about me and what I want..every man has to follow his own convictions. I personally hate reading anything unless it's the Bible or an informational books..If a man or women can read a Harry Potter and not feel convicted then there oK in my book..the same with drinking a glass of wine or cold beer..Each man's personal convictions will change..It's all in Romans 14..and the bottom line is we are not to judge another man and his convictions...However; if we are doing something questionable { According to Romans 14..we are to keep that to ourselves lest we offend someone "Whom Christ died for." }
There are some things in my life many would think I was very liberal and then some things some would think I am very legalistic..I keep those things to myself..I will say one thing though that Paul said,"The less faith you have the more rules you will put on yourself." so I 'm lacking some faith[8D]
The Harry Potter series never got me excited, but I see no problem letting your kids read it if they're interested. Obviously you have to respect the rules set by the parents of your child's friends.
I love Tolkien also and I consider Ray Bradbury's "Martian Chronicles" to be one of the greatest pieces of literature there is.
We sheep have a fondness for things pastoral

I can respect that, at least you're not picking and choosing.

A good analogy .... I drink a beer AND read HP
Potter books made huge waves when the books and movies became hits. That anyone STILL bans them though kinda shocked me

Stealthyvat,
Actually Staelth..with the recession and end times at hand you should see more of this as Christians are examining their lives more and more..We are in the last days so folks are doing alot of self.evaluation ..
Meanwhile ..the world seems to be going deeper and deeper into darkness..decieving and being decieved.
We don't let our kids watch it either. And it is because of the sorcery. Neither do we allow Shrek due to sexual innuendos, no simpsons, family guy, southpark ect. I screen all movies before my kids get to watch them and in a few cases make sure that I watch with them in case something objectional comes up.
I don't like spongebob either, it is an extremely annoying show with no educational value it is empty from what I have seen. I stick with PBS but still watch with my kids.
I can't sheild my kids from everything but I can reduce my adding to the problem and use the things they like to help educate them. My kids like Word Girl, Word World, Martha Speaks, Sid the Science Kid, and my youngest Curious George.
